Of course they knew about it before today.
Since yesterday, their web site has had:
"DUPLICATED TRANSACTIONS
Please be aware that you may see duplicate transactions in your account.
We apologise if this has happened. Please be assured that whilst you may
see two of the same transaction, only one has been processed. We can
confirm your online balance is correct. We apologise for any
inconvenience and are working hard to sort this. "
My account was actually showing a duplicate payment in !0 -
I seem to recall reading about this problem last week on one or more of the MSE threads, with branch staff investigating. So that would imply the Bank knowing about it a lot earlier than they are admitting to.0

I feel really sorry for the millions of customers, This is dreadful "what is the fsa doing about all this" they have been very quiet, The government should now be taking action this is simply not good enough.0

My daughter is off to work in a hospital in Malawi this Sunday. She had arranged for money to be paid for her transport from the airport. The money has left her NatWest account but not arrived in the bank in Malawi. NatWest dont 'know' where it is. Apart from sending it again from a none NatWest account is there anything else we can do. Thanks0

Malawi has one of the least developed banking systems in the world. The vast majority of even business-to-business transactions are done with cash. In many cases, banks still process transfers from one branch to another by writing a letter and posting it.
SWIFT payments can theoretically take several months. The sending bank won't know 'where the money is' (they'll eventually get either confirmation or notice that the payment failed - until then they have to just wait). It's a very flexible system but the cost is that it's generally manually done (even in the UK, some smaller building societies still have to send somebody to walk to a branch of a bigger bank to do the payments!)
Once they've sent the payment, there isn't much else RBS can do for you until it works its way through the system.0 -

Not just loan payment problems, cheques are not clearing I was told today.
Yesterday morning I paid an RBS cheque into my RBS account and while I can't usually draw on it the next day, it always shows up in my account. I spoke to the branch manager today and was told that they found cheques weren't clearing at close of business yesterday in the way they usually do.
So if you are hoping for a cheque to clear, or have paid by cheque and the recipient needs the money quickly it could be a problem for some.
It's only a game

So.....
Having missed the chaos last week I went on the weekly shop last night as per usual. Paid by debit card, from my RBS account. Transaction declined. Eh?
Ended up paying with Credit card. Went home and checked digital banking. £8 left on my account.
RBS had taken my two loan payments off twice.
Phoned them - was reassured it would be sorted overnight....
.... Checked this morning. Still the same.
I really feel uneasy now trusting these bankers with my hard earned money.
What really grinds my gears is that if this was on the other foot and caused by my mistake, I'd be getting hit with bank charges left right and centre.
Not amused.0
