I really wouldn't bother with anything at UK duty free but have found cigs, baccy and spirits at very good prices at both DXB and KUL.
  • Surely, if you buy an expensive item 'duty free' it is subject to tax when it is brought back into the UK. If it is not declared, but you are caught, would there not be a substantial financila penalty?
  • I always try and buy the plastic bottles as there lighter in weight and also easier to pack in suitcase.

    Do you mean they're?

I very rarely buy anything from Duty Free but in the past before my holiday I have checked perfume prices at Beauty Fresh and then rung Manchester airport duty free and asked them for the price of the perfume I wanted and they told me! Also, if you are flying with an airline that charges for drinks you can take 2 x 100 mls of your favourite tipple. I have some miniature plastic gin bottles. Last time I flew which was 3 weeks ago I declared them in Security in my little plastic regulatory bag and the security officer said she didn't know you could do that but she will do it in the future!

Duty Free on a connecting flight or at the end of a long flight can be useful to freshen up a bit. I normally take a huge blob of moisturiser for my skin and then make myself smell nice with the perfume. If you're arriving somewhere hot then there might be sun cream testers which can be useful for your face until you manage to unpack.
  • I fly from Luton airport very often but would not buy any duty free because all the ' duty free ' is more expensive than in even the local shops in MK

A screw cap bottle of wine to drink on the plane ;).

2l of gin when we go to Gambia to drink with OJ on the balcony.

Touche eclat - no cheaper but I don't live near big stores so can't get it in the shade I want.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

It seems crazy that fags are sold duty free, when taxation is the single most effective way to reduce smoking in the population. Australia recently drastically dropped the duty free limit (50 fags I think).
There is no reason to allow a deadly product to be sold at a heavily discounted price at ports - what message does thats end out?

I love Estee Lauder perfume so always buy it when its two for fractionally over the price of one. Usully in the US coming back has been best place. Also Gin usually good in US to bring back.
