Whereabouts in the country are you because some bands will not travel far. Also I would budget on around £1000 because you do get what you pay for in terms of quality, but £1000 will get you more out of London than in!
Best weddings I've been to have been where the bride & groom made their own CDs and got a (preferably sober) friend to keep them coming. It's a lot cheaper and fun to do and you can ask guests to come up with the songs they'd like so everyone gets to hear something they want to. I guess you could do it with an ipod and a playlist now. Maybe not your stye though

I had actually thought of this as an option but I contacted the Hotel to ask about the sound system and lighting system in the function room and they told me that they don't have any speakers in the room and the lights can only be dimmed. They said that normally the DJ provides the sound and lighting as well so probably best getting a band and DJ. Thanks anyway for the idea.
Many thanks to the rest of you as well for your help, I know we have left it late in getting our entertainment booked!
Sorry to barge in but I noticed a few hits to my site from this thread so I thought I'd take a look. Thanks CS111 for the recommendation and I look forward to seeing you in July and ooo000ooo (hope I've spelt that right ) in April.
As this is a money saving forum and, at the risk of taking this thread slightly 'off topic' I though I could share one observation that may save you a few hundred pounds in relation to your wedding reception.
If you have decided to include an evening buffet my advice would be to cater for your extra evening guests and only a small percentage of your day guests. From the hundreds of wedding receptions I have attended this is one area where I feel so much money is literally thrown away.
Anyway that's my 2d worth. I don't want to hijack this thread but if anyone is looking for help with anything related to weddings I'm happy to offer my advice.
PS It's good to see a forum with a special section just for NI
The best band i have heard by far (and I mean they were brillant) is a band called Backbeat. They are not cheap at about £900 but well worth the money.
3 piece guitar rock and roll band. Complete with leather trousers and shades.
They played at my wedding and had everyone on the floor, from 5yr olds
to 70 yr olds, and eveyone told me afterwards the band were great.
They play 50s-60s classics - Chuck Berry, Elvis, Eddie Cochrane etc.
I also got inflatable guitars for the kids, and they were up on stage with
the band giving it loads - couldn't get them off the stage.
Have loads of recommendations myself but to be honest if theres a particular band your interested in, or genre of music, see when they're playing next and go watch them. I did this with my brother when he was looking a band for his wedding, big 9 piece, made all the difference actually hearing them and getting to speak to them face to face
Hope you get sorted
Cath
Don't ask me a question unless your prepared to hear the honest answer
Yes that is the Thanks button on the right hand side, don't be afraid to slap it, naked people appear
Impact are a great wedding band and a varied range of material from 60's through to modern day. Get in touch if need be I have a contact number for them.
PP and the Floor Shakers are very good, an old work friend of mine quit his job to go and play full time with them. Been to several of there shows and they always go down well.
Hi Squidzin, Go and see a couple of bands live and then hire them yourself directly. instead of booking them through an entertainment agency. This can save you quite a lot of money on commisions. I hope this helps.
Hope he's good, we've him booked for our reception in april
A little update, Paul did our wedding reception and did a great job Considering it was a small party and even smaller by the time the old fogies went home I think he managed to keep the rest of us up dancing just about all night. I'd recommend his pub quiz as a great ice breaker at the start of the night. It got everyone talking (cheating and swapping answers) and made it more of a party than a formal do. His sound system is amazing and it makes a real difference being able to hear the music and what he's saying.
Cheers Paul

Thanks Alistair, great to read you enjoyed the evening - you're right cheating is encouraged, but still someone thought I was Garth Brooks during the pub quiz picture round
