If because I'm delayed either on a flight or at border controls means I reach the car hire desk out of hours and am charged a fee, firstly do I need to pay this? Secondly is it fair not to pay and the car hire staff be penalised/disciplined through no fault of their own when they have had to stay late and thirdly can I get a refund?0

Did you book a flight and car hire package?Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0 -

I don't understand why they would be disciplined? It's not their fault if you refuse to pay (though if you do refuse - they presumably wouldn't release the car anyway).0 -
They have targets they have to reach including % of sales, conversions etc. if a customer refuses to pay they can use discretion to a point I believe but if they let every customer off they will face the possibilty of action against them. The figures don't care if there's been a strike. By the same point they could refuse the cars but that's not fair on the customers or the hassle on the staff. They do often wait for late bookings that can't take the car for numerous reasons but they get paid for the time they are at work. It doesn't take into account the time waiting for the staff bus which runs less often at night etc!
I just hope for all travellers it runs smoothly!0 -

If her employers haven't got a contingency plan in place for Wednesday then they are asking for trouble.
And if she is disciplined for failing to follow instructions that were never issued then she is probably better off being out of there. Any boss that sees something like this coming and doesn't prepare for it should be the one being disciplined.0 -
I doubt they've anything planned just expect the staff to stay!
It's easy saying she's better off out but there's no jobs on that type of work in the area, she's done it for ten years, lost her job twice in 8 months cos of company's closing down. She's recently taken a role with a top company but the wages are terrible but a chance of promotion.0
