A pressure cooker. I bought my first one when I was 18. I only replaced the handle, the lid and the valve in 30 years. I have then bought a new one which is now 19 years old. Although heavy the cooker is worth taking on camping and sailing expeditions as it can cook a 3 course meal before the neighbors have boiled their kettle.

By girlfriends laptop is very old (512mb, 800mhz). It was slow.
An amazing amount of people's first reaction on a slow computer is to buy a new one.

As a stop-gap I put an Ubuntu live CD in there.
She can now get online at least.

Instead, consider doing everything online instead, like Google Docs.

People say it's complicated but I'd say definately not if you're only browsing online, which is what people do most. How hard is it to burn off a DVD? To make it even simpler I skipped plugging into the internet router with an old fashioned cable.

It's also worth having something like this in case you have a problem. Then you can at least have another option to get to your online banking and avoid paying a phone bill.
Order of events: Banks lose our money -> get bailed out -> were inflating GBP to cover it -> now taxing us -> next will grab your funds direct -> things get really desperate to balance the books. What should have happened?: banks go bust and we lost our money much quicker
  • on-line banking is only as safe as your own computer .

Ive always had all the protection in place...i still wouldn't do it .

it may look like you're saving money ..get hacked ..and it will be doing the complete opposite .

  • I agree with using breadmakers, they do save so much. Do also check out the three main clearance foodstores online as they often have 3.5kg of breadmix for around £1.30. You just measure into the machine, add water and press the start button.

By using the clearance sites we are saving a lot against shop prices, and these companies deliver right to your door.

Expect to pay around £5 delivery for upto 30kg, but think how much bread you can make for that!

When I don't have time to bake, I do shop for reduced bread and freeze it. A small undercounter freezer cost me £30 off ebay and it runs like new. Ideal in the garage, and for grabbing mega bargains.

Also use mysupermarket.com for all my online food shopping.

cheapest equipment bought has to be a chapati griddle for £3.99 from local asian store. we loved asian food but recently the mrs was diagnosed with coeliac disease so to make our own gluten chapatis was a godsend. found the trick for gluten free chapatis from:

makes a world of difference especially when you find your life turned upside down. save a fortune plus none of the local takeaways will make it for you because of "food regulations". "we can't take customers flour. we can only use our own"

Clippers! I bought a set of clippers with attachments for £17 a couple of years ago ( you can get them cheaper but this came with lots of attachments, comb and hairdressing scissors). Bought these because my 3 year old was a nightmare to take to the hairdresser, screaming the place down, so I started cutting his hair at home (I use no.3 & 4 setting & tidy the top with scissors so he's not a skin'ead!!). My husband asked me to cut his, I was scared but have now been doing it almost 2 years. he used to pay £25 a cut about 4-5times a year (yes I know that's a lot!). Saves us around £120 a year, plus he doesn't wait ages till it's a bit too long then have it cut really short, but he can have a trim whenever he wants! I haven't risked mine or my daughter's hair yet to my attempts, but have started colouring my own hair saving about £100/year!

I saved much more than that over Christmas by not getting sucked into the whole concept of it.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

A small 12v inflator . Keeps the correct tyre pressures on my car , caravan , bike and trailer which helps fuel efficiency. Particularly useful for the caravan which is not easy to manoeuvre into place at filling stations.
Don't need to make visits to local garages for tyre checking (avoiding fuel usage and payment for air lines).
Will also inflate air beds , footballs etc.
It's also got two lights , white and a flashing red one - not found a use for the latter.
    About £20.
    Forgotten but not gone.
