Funny, i have never had a problem getting a 12months contract
Im with orange and all i had to do was ask, had a new top of the range phone and bonuses both this and last year + a tariff reduction in between, though 18 months was the default option and wasnt 12 months wasnt selectable on the website. I imagine this is the reason for the the great increase in 18 month contracts, people just bought the standard deal without looking at the terms or asking about a normal contract.
People shoudl take more care in what they are signing up for, its there own fault they are locked in for ages - but the phone networks dont exactly help the situation they probably know most people will just accept the default terms on there suggested deals.0 -

Strange, after 7 years with Orange they wouldn't even give me a decent free handset upgrade and I was paying £30 a month for minutes only!
Anyways, it will be very interesting to hear the experiences of anyone who's signed up to Tesco0 -

.
The increase in the 18/24 month contracts is because the companies can offer the latest phones for less money upfront making the phone more attractive.
I'm on a 24 month contract simply because I was able to get my Nokia 5800 the day it came out (early 2009) for free and don't have the urge to replace phones every 5 mins.
If people can't afford to get the latest phone on a 12 month contract then they should probably give up on their urge to have the latest phone.0 -
Actually it's because they can make more money through less churn and longer tie-ins.0
