We've been through 3 dysons over the past 7 years and have now given up! Miele make quality goods (although I've never been able to afford any!). Don't have any pets so settled on a Henry which has been great. The kids like to chat to it too............................

We got the Miele in the end and it's great, especially as the hot air vent is on the top so you can use it stood on end (great for stairs).

  • I have had Henry's for years. They are easy to use and absolutely brilliant. I have 2 cats (one long haired) and a dog. Nowadays Henry's have 2 levels of suction, the lower level is great for getting cat hair out of the doormat without sucking up the doormat itself... I tend to kill mine by using then for sucking up builders rubble without a bag but most people don't do that!

Best place to get them is Homebase on 10% day - next weekend..
  • Came on here looking for similar advice, as my overpriced-but-cheap Dyson (DC05 I think, the purple and green one) is on its last legs (or wheels) - bought it in 2001, already had the motor replaced under warranty about 2003, the cord has been winding itself in for the past couple of years (keep it out with a couple of clothes pegs but it even swallowed one of those the other day), and now the bit that holds the tube on has broken so it keeps falling off. Never again will I pay that much for a vacuum cleaner!

There is a Henry model for pets now - Henry Hound - http://www.homebase.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=20001&partNumber=0880347&c_3=3%7Ccat_10586849%7CCylinder+vacuum+cleaners+with+bags%7C10586866&c_2=2%7Ccat_10308092%7CVacuum+and+carpet+cleaners%7C10586849&c_1=1%7Ccategory_root%7CHome+Electrical%7C10308092

Don't know if it's any good though!

Maytaurus, I saw that Electrolux in Tesco the other day and was hoping to find some reviews on here :)
  • I've just bought a cheap Miele (thru Quidco of course) £88 in delivery & so far v impressed. Have had Dysons b4 (2) & they are great when they work, but a pain in the b*m when they don't (which was quite frequent). Wouldn't have another one I'm afraid, but the Miele seems good
    A miserably failed DFW :(

We are having new carpets fitted in a couple of weeks and I have said that once they are in we are getting a new vacuum cleaner as our current one is pretty rubbish. We currently have one cat and the hair gets everywhere so I want something that is going to be able to cope with picking that up and keeping our carpets looking nice and fresh for as long as possible.

I think we are going to get a Miele cat and dog as I see them recommended time and time again on threads like these. My husband thinks I must be mad to spend out that much on a hoover so it had better be good or I'll never hear the end of it! Luckily we have lots of John Lewis vouchers that we received as wedding presents so I expect we will use those - unless I can find it at a greatlty reduced price elsewhere :)

We bought a 'Pet Vax' six years ago - it doubles as a a shampooer too, so very good value for money. Yes, it's a pretty good machine, however the key to it's 'Pet' Vax status is down to one brush which comes with the model, called a turbo-tool. This is a handheld brush with extra brushes inside, powered by the suction itself. It sounds like a jet engine and it really does get up cat hair a treat. After two years of serious use, we wore out the little turbo-tool.... So I went to the Vax shop online and spotted... A Turbo Brush!!! Same idea as before, just bigger like a normal brush head. The Turbo-Brush cost about £30, so not cheap. It's brilliant but you do have to declog it after each use. My money saving tip here is; the Vax turbo-brush, I'm pretty sure, fits a standard size vacuum cleaner pipe, so I'd hazard a guess you could use it on any vacumm cleaner and save yourself a few £s!!!
