Kids Party Bags - Ideas please..

Options
Hi, its DS2s birthday soon, so we've got to do the party thing. I don't want to be a spoilsport and not give party bags, but I absolutely hate the plastic !!!!!! that you get in most of these things - toys that will be in the bin in hours.

Can anyone suggest what I can do as a green bag...I was planning on getting brown paper bags and potato printing on them, but I'd like some ideas for contents if you have them

Thanks

  • Try this website, not cheap but they have a small things that may be suitable like spinners and whizzers ... I suppose it depends on the age of the children.

    Hope the party goes well.

  • Home made cookies for treats??
It's going to be hard to find part favours that aren't plastic. Have you looked at the Hawkins Bazaar website? They do lots of unusual things.

I have also found Wood N Splash with some traditional type toys or Good To Be Wood have some nice items.

Hopefully these will give you a starting point :)
  • How about packets of seeds with instructions of how/when to plant, homemade biscuits/cookies with the recipe so that they can make them at home too, pencils from that company 'I used to be..' or something like that (can't remember what they are called but they make pencils out of plastic cups) - running out of ideas now...how old are the children?
  • Was reading through the papers from yesterday and came across The Guardian which has produced a Green living guide. In there was the following websites for green toys ....

    www.greenboardgames.com (boardgames using recycled products)

www.goodtobewood.com (wooden toys and games, including jigsaws, pushalongs, dolls and other goodies)

www.in2play.co.uk (wooden toys, cardboard playhouses and rockets)

    www.myriadonline.co.uk (wooden toys)

www.lankakade.co.uk as previosuly mentioned (fairtrade toys from sourced rubberwood or recycled products. Eco-friendly packaging.)

Even if they don't have small toys for party bags, they may have ideas for Christmas and Birthday presents that are made from green products and plant-dye paints.

  • how about buying some litle terracota plant pots and getting the kids to paint their own at the party?
Then later, put in soil and a crocus/snowdrop/narcisis bulb and place a label in with childs name as their party 'bag'?

much more original and green too!

  • How about a book instead of a party bag. The book people do a pack of 10 for £10.

Or get some small paper bags and put in little boxes of raisins, some glass marbles (if the children are old enough), some homemade playdoh in sandwich bags (can't think of an green alternative) and a pad and some pencils (or print off some colouring pages from the internet).

I'd go along with Bunglegirl. We did seeds, sunflowers, and about 6 months later we did a trip to some of the houses to see how they'd grown, the kids loved it.
  • I did books for my DD's 5th birthday recently. I bought the Rainbow Fairy books from book people 7 for £6.99 and also the Usborne Puzzle books 6 books for £6.99. The latter seem to have gone down really well - I had parents ring to thank me for something decent rather than as you say the plastic rubbish. I wrapped them in tissue paper.

I love the sunflower seeds idea - might do that for DD2 bday.

    Good luck.

Hi, what about bath bombs from somewhere like The Body Shop? They are 100% natural and kids absolutely love them floating in their bath. I did it for my twins birthday, blues and greens and yellows for the boys and pinks etc for the girls. You can get little ones or really big ones depending on budget/amount of kids etc.

    Yeah..whatever
  • The seed and pot thing is wonderful and provides an activity for the party itself - at this time of year bulbs are perfect.

Other fillers - shells, little coloured glass beads, beads and fine elastic for threading, crystals, pretty feathers, brightly coloured carded wool etc. Making something is lovely if you have the time - little gnomes or fairies, mermaids etc, of felt and wool. Myriad has some beautiful craft materials for this sort of thing, but rather pricey.
