Visiting old houses and lush gardens north west

Any ideas? Looking for some great days out in the North West with a historical focus plus some old fashioned style hotels in the countryside with easy access to places of interest.
Looking to put together a week's holiday touring the North West and staying at two or three good hotels late summer or early autumn when prices will be a bit cheaper.
Your input much appreciated.

Have you thought about joining the historic house association? Google HHA they are a scheme where you buy and annual ticket then it gives you a pass to all the property's in the scheme, most of the big ones around here are members, it was great while the children were small. I assume their website will give some idea of the property's in the area you want to go.Owner of a cute cottage in the North York Moors :j0

If you're on the M6 driving North between Jct 33 and Jct 34 you'll notice all the Lancaster University buildings on your left, and not long after you'll see a strange looking domed building also on your left.
That building is the Williamson Memorial, and part of Williamson Park at the top of Lancaster.
The Park is a very pleasant place to visit, with glorious views over the River Lune estuary towards Morecambe, Heysham and the Lakeland Hills...

Would the North West include North Wales? The town of Conwy has plenty of history including the Castle, Plas Mawr and Aberconwy House.

Just outside Conwy itself you'll find Pensychnant Conservation Centre - http://www.pensychnant.co.uk/page21.html - and just across the river you have Bodnant Gardens - http://www.bodnantgarden.co.uk/.

If you are looking at hotels for your trip, I can recommend a few good ones.
Blackpool is not exactly stately home territory, but a good place to base yourself for the likes of Preston,Garstang ( lovely old town) Kirkham etc. A hotel I have stayed in twice and highly recommend is Number one South Beach. Lovely boutique style B&B on south shore, very quiet at night, amazing rooms, great food, 5 mins away from Lytham St annes.
Lancashire based, round Blackburn is the Millstone at Mellor, village pub, cask ales, great rooms, superb food.
If you are going up to South Cumbria, Duke of edinburgh or imperial hotel in Barrow, both really good0 -

And yes, includes Wales too. What about Manchester? anything we should really make an effort to see in the city and surrounding area?0 -
Muncaster Castle http://www.muncaster.co.uk/ has the most stunning gardens, and if your there for about 2ish (I think, might be worth checking) you can watch them feed the herons which is one of the most amazing things I have seen. The house is pretty cool too and haunted, well so they say!

Manchester has some great museums, Imperial war museum for example.
You could even go on the manchester ship canal cruise

Tatton Park is great, the house is amazing. Close by is Styal village, an old textile factory/workhouse. Everything works there, really good day out. There is an old school on site, which shows you how the young kids taken to work at the mill were educated, fed and treated for illness. If you have kids with you, they sit in for a lesson, with chalk and boards to write with !
You also have close by Dunam massey deer park, lovely grounds. There is Jodrell bank observatory bit further out which is good.
People ( and that goes for us too who live here in the north west ) don't realise what our area has to offer !0 -
Thinking of a bit of retail therapy here...money saving of course.
Any really good charity shops where you can get bargains in the North West? Thinking posh frocks and smart casual just in case we book into a heavily discounted smart hotel on our travels....need a wardrobe update..0
