Arrgghhhh forgot to put out a load of washing and now they stink  I've tried washing them again to no avail. Any ideas? The worst offenders are a pair of cotton mix trousers and a light sweater. Id rather not chuck them as they are still really wearable but pong

I've always found a quick wash with conditioner has done the trick. If that hasn't worked, maybe hang them outside to dry and then wash again? Sorry don't have any direct experience to draw upon.some people grin and bear it, others smile and do it0

Hello,
I've done this before....! Let them dry thoroughly (outside is best) and then rewash.
Hope this helps!Official DFW Member 716 - Proud to be dealing with my debts0 -
Nooo don't chuck them out! I had that same problem a way back and all I had to do was to rinse the item BY HAND in a wash basin with 3 tablespoons of vinegar in it and plenty of water, left it in for 5 minutes and out again, let it drip dry over the bath and then put it do dry properly near an open window (I don't have a garden or other outdoor place to hang the washing).
Another time years ago, before I became all green and OS, I put a tablespoon of bleach in the water and rinsed the garment, also by hand, swishing it about for only 30 seconds or so, and then out again so that the bleach would not do any damage. Even with coloured garments it works well, as long as you give them another quick rinse in plain water. It's safer with the vinegar though.
On both occasions the nasty smell went.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -
perhaps letting them dry first then washing them as others have suggested will work. If this happens to me I just put through the wash on a warm/hot wash with some vinegar and some more washing liquid - sometimes by putting it in the drum with the clothes it helps more
good luck xr.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!0 -
dry before rewashing - good line drying weather where i am today. hopefully once fully dry the will rewash without the smell. i have done this several times. i beleive (may be wrong) it is fabric conditioner that causes the problem as it has never happened when using vinegar in the wash.Dogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. There is no more hope for a fool than for someone who says, "i am really clever!"0

I would put the washing machine on a hot empty cycle first. Then re-wash them with fabric conditioner.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Quick Grabbit, Freebies, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning and the UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.

Well what I do if my towels smell a bit of stale water is put a BIG scoop of soda crystals in the washer drum with a small amount of normal washing powder/liquid. It's always worked a treat for me!0
