"Scottish Power trying to increase my monthly Direct Debit"
Hi can anyone advise please. My capped rate recently ended with Scottish Power and I then "signed up" for their online rate. I made monthly payments by Direct Debit. I have now had an e-mail from SP wanting to increase my monthly payment by almost £20 (obviously due to higher charges now). I do not want to do this as I have just had a combined bill which is paid and account is totally up to date. I object to Scottish Power earning interest on my money (sitting in their account while I owe nothing). Anyway, I would like to keep my monthly payments at the rate currently set and then pay of any outstanding balance each quarter. They (Scottish Power) do not want this, obviously preferring the increased monthly DD. Can I switch to another supplier or am I "tied" to SP?
Can anyone help. Thanks.

Ring them up, its better to speak to them direct!0

Can you not cancel the DD and just pay per quarter? That way you'd be paying for what you use.0

Also any accrued debt would need to be repaid."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
As Neil says, phone them up. The computer picks figures seemingly at random, at times - get a human, and you can negotiate a more sensible figure, or agree to keep it the same but review it again in six months, say.
I've done it every time ...0 -
They did this to me when they had the last rise in costs... I tried negotiating but they were having none of it... they said that the amount they were putting it up to would just cover the price rise and wouldn't even let me keep it as was ....#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

They put mine up too by £25 and I'm in credit, rang them up and they won't lower it, said they'll review it in 3 months, as we are now in the Summer quarter I don't know how that's going to work. I offered to pay the difference on line if there was a shortfall but no dice0

SP are the worst for increasing DD amounts from what I've seen. They've increased mine beyond where it should be, given that we have just come into warmer weather and my gas consumption has dropped like a stone.0

Hi I'm a bit confused by the DD system for elec and gas. I always paid per quarter and fed my consumption through website so I got accurate readings. If SP are putting their prices up and down, not reflecting what you are actually using, then what is the incentive to pay this way?0
