Serious Issues with Orange Contract, Advice?

Ello,

I currently have the misfortune of having a contract phone with Orange, with a serious problem that I don't have a clue what to do with! Seeing as there are so many knowledgeable people here, thought I would ask for any advice!

Before I start, before anybody jumps on me, in the entire event below I have never once sworn, raised my voice or been anything but polite. My bill is always paid on the day it is due by direct debit. I am not in arrears and never have been.

I took out my contract last April, a 12 month yourplan 120 deal and at the time was told the usual price is £25 a month, but they would match the internet tariff at £15 a month which was great, perfect plan for me, great price.

I renewed the contract this April, confirming with them that they would not touch my contract, and took home my new d500. All has been fine until this month my bill shot back up to £25 a month.

I called them up, to have CS tell me it was an 18 month promotion I signed up for, nothing else. I told them I have my name signed on a contract saying it was a £15 a month tariff, NOT a promotion, to be told theres nothing that can be done and it was up to the orange store I bought it from to issue any discount. She insisted it was just an 18 month promotion. I asked to speak to a supervisor, who told me the same. He then went on to say that if I am not willing to pay the extra, then he would bar my phone. I told him he could not do that, as that would leave them in violation of their contract to provide the service I am paying/have paid for, and his response...?

"I can do whatever I want."

he then barred my phone, and hung up on me.

I called the orange store I bought the phone from, the (new) store manager said at the time I took the deal, nobody knew how long it would have lasted for and that it was up to orange CS to issue any discount, not them. He offered to call CS to clear it up, after 5 hours he called back saying they would not listen to him at all, and my only option was to try calling terminations.

I called terminations, to find an increasingly useless member of staff. The most snide, sarcastic girl ever basically told me 'Nothing I can do at all.' to every question or request. She refused to put me through to a supervisor, refused to follow the enquiry up, refused to give me any info on what I should do next, refused to give me her name, and refused to give me a complaints procedure. She did remind me that I am responsible for continuing to pay for my phone, though it is barred and they are not providing me any service whatsoever and that I would have debt collection proceedings issued if I at any time fail to pay a bill.

I am now stuck, with a barred phone, being forced to pay for a contract that I am being refused to use. They are refusing to let me speak to anybody at all (there is apparently a note on my account to reminding them of this), and I have no contact information for anybody higher up who could possibly do anything.

I do however know, that I have a signed contract saying my tariff is £15 a month. I am sure the 18 month promotion is a cop out as obviously why would they offer an 18 month promotion on a 12 month contract. I do know they have not informed me of the price increased and are in breach of contract. I do know they have no right to bar my phone as I owe them no money at all and are once again in breach of contract (their own T&C's state the only way they are allowed to bar my phone for non payment is if I do not pay after 14 days of my bill being requested).

My next bill is due to be paid on the 3rd of October.

Please can anybody offer any advice at all? I personally can't see a way out, these huge faceless companies bury themselves so well that they can mess customers about like this. My only thought is to sell my phone and buy out the rest of my contract (£150), and move to O2. Should I tell them I have a works contract with them as well, spending £10k PA with them that I will be moving in November also (which is true!)

I cannot find their complaints procedure on my bill, or on their website anywhere.

Thanks for your help! If anybody needs any more info Please let me know and I'll do my best.

Wow, that's a shocking attitude from Orange, unlucky mate.

I'm sure others will be able to help you further but for starters I recommend sending a letter via recorded delivery to the following address stating everything as you have done in your post.

    Customer Service Department
    P.O. Box 10
    Patchway
    Bristol
    BS32 4BQ

I've had excellent and prompt response to issues using this method.

    Good luck :)

i think orange customer service is the worst in the world.i was in same position as you when suddently my bill rose from £15 to £27 for each of my phones, without any change in circumistances. i immediately phoned the useless cs and was given exactly the same answer as yours plus something to do price much with T-mobile.i was on the phone at least 4-5 a day for 3 days when i was told to contact the shop where i bought the phone. the guy was symphathetic and agreed to refund me and sort it out with them,i dont know how he went about but am sure he knows that they always doing that to customers. and through my owner investigation i know know that the the shops that sell the phones are not very honest. i suspect they are not giving all the info.that they should give to the customers. anyway to cut story write to the above customer service (they are much proffesional then the ones on the 150) plus see trading standard/CAB. plus phones 4 u may also try to buy out the contract for you if u got less than 3months left. good luck.
are you thinking what iam thinking :T
  • Strangely I had vented my frustration last night by writing out a complaint letter, even though I had nowhere to send it to!

I'll get this posted tomorrow (and will look for a fax number)

Thanks for this, all advice is appreciated!

as above - you will hopefully have used most of what you wrote in your post in the letter as it covers all the points nicely without being abusive etc (always a no no in any complaint letter).

should you mention the company account??? oh most assuredly - mention that a lot.

i would do a search and see if you can find details of the high up bods in orange - CEO etc and send copies to them too - make sure you have a note on the letters indicating who else they are cc'd to (this may give normal CS the hurry up or it might get something done from one of the high ups - cover as many bases as possible)

thinking about it, i'm sure someone had a problem recently on this board with orange and someone found the relevant name and posted it - have a search.

the other thing i would say is maybe photocopy the contract you have and include it? can't hurt. oh and make sure you indicate what it is they could do to rectify the situation - preferably a spangly new handset, no new contract ties and at most £15 pm until april when you can leave and go somewhere else anyway :)

one of the worst cases i've read - hope it gets resolved for you quickly.

    Sean,

Welcome to MSE!! I'm sorry also to hear of your misfortune with Orange and the lack of customer service.

I too was with Orange and have to say there the most useless bunch of..Well, you know the rest!

I sold my Samsung D500 and bought out of my contract and i'm so glad i did that! I have a phone with O2 now, the call quality is 100 times better than Orange. Customer Service can be a bit of a problem but they do get there in the end and as far as i'm concerned if they don't know something when you ask they do try there best to find out the answer for you!! The best of all though is there commitment to existing customers who stay loyal to the network..

I've been with O2 now for about 7-8 years and have the following tariff..500 X Network Anytime Mins, 500 Texts per month and a £10.00 per month line rental discount. Overall Cost = £15 per month for the tariff

Try asking Orange to beat that!!! My advice to you mate is ask them to show you the contract where you signed agreeing to this promotion for 18months!!
Other than that, sell your phone and move over to O2! I'm 100% certain you will get much better service!!

    Good Luck!
  • Well firstly you have my sympathies! I tried to get an upgrade through Orange directly. I have 3 lines on two phones. They did not appear to be able to understand the simple principle that my total spend was what I wanted them to take into account, NOT any single account. Did they? Well no! That's a surprise. I then received a random update offer via a text message from Docklands telecom. All went well until I received the phone and found the Bluetooth headset I was promised was not as promised. A long and truly unbelievable saga ensued with me in direct communication with the MD at Docklands, The outcome was that Orange do not seem to know their a****s from their elbows. I finally was lucky enough to chance upon a truly spectacular Customer Service guy at Orange who has given service far far over and beyond the call of duty. He has monitored my account for weeks and told me what is ACTUALLY going on as opposed to what they tell you.!! We have now got to the stage that all I am now missing is my promised double texts. If you are still suffering, this guy said to me as you have already been advised, to write to Bristol as the company recognises it has big problems with their CS and is trying really hard and Bristol are in a position to sort things out best of all. If you are still suffering, PM me and if you are willing to give me some details and I'll ask my new found friend at Orange if he can help you too. But be quick, he's emigrating in a month - fed up with life in Blighty!!

    Sean,

Sorry to hear about the mess with your phone. I must admit that I have had a mixed response with Orange CS in the past. It all started when I upgraded my PAYG to a contract in February this year. "Welcome to Orange" phone calls came and went. Everything went smoothly, bills arrived and were paid by DD or so I thought.

2nd bill arrived for over £75, I noticed that the bill mentioned an arrears, so I phoned them to ask about it and was told that there was no DD set up, despite me signing one in the store! I set the DD up there and then and asked a simple question. "Why wasn't I offered the chance to set up the DD any sooner by CS?" I wasn't disputing the fact that owed the money as I had used the service. No reply was forthcoming so I wrote to Bristol.

2 days later I got a very apologetic phone call from Orange saying that I should have been offered the DD sooner and that they would ensure that my complaint was fed back into their ongoing customer care.

Since then I have had no problems with Orange.

    cheers

  • Thanks for the advice all,

I have my letter written out, but I'm struggling to find my copy of the contract (they should surely have it on file themselves anyway) - I know its here somewhere though.

I've been an orange customer with either work or personal accounts for the best part of 8 years now, and I've been blissfully unaware of any issues like this for as long but now I've had the fortune of this event, looking into it has shown me literally several hundreds of complaints as serious as many on this board - its quite obvious they have big issues that I cannot trust any future business with, work or personal (my works account is out of contract in November anyway).

I'll keep everybody updated if I get any response. I'll be asking for compensation in my letter as I need my phone for emergency contact (my brother is severly disabled and calls me in case of emergencies, which happen more often than not!) so I now need to go out and get a payg sim and top it up etc, and call round to update everyone, and so on.

  • RESULT:

Got a call this afternoon from the executive office, curtosy of the email from the address I got off these forums.

Girl apologised and offered me half price line rental until the end of my contract plus a small credit to my account, and instantly unbarred it.

To be honest I would have preferred to have our contract terminated, but nevermind, this way I dont lose my number, and it does make it a good tariff.

    Thanks all!
