1and1 Billing

Hey,
I thought i would just post here (i don't know if this is the correct board sorry, seemed most appropriate here i guess) about the awful experience i have had with 1and1.
Two years, 6 months ago i purchased a .co.uk domain for two years (23/12/05). I used the domain for about a year, and then didn't bother with it, didn't bother renewing and thought it had just been released.
Now, yesterday i got a letter from a debt collection agency saying i owe them money. Well thats strange because somehow they have managed to accept my card details, say they have taken payment for the domain and issue me with the domain
1) Clearly their system at fault for accepting a expired card
2) Did not provide any notification that the payment hadn't been accepted
3) Showed "We will debit your credit card with the full amount. Thank You!" on the invoice

I now feel conned because i have been forced to pay the £5 fee (notice they even made a mistake on the letter as it said £15 in the text!) when they have left it so late and provided me with no notification.
Unfortunately i don't have the emails back dating that far so there doesn't seem to be a lot i can do
Any advise please?

My advice would be to pay up and then formally cancel it. The last thing you want is a debt collector chasing you. Bite the bullet and grin and bare it. (wish I had with the inland revenue but that's a very different story !)
If yhey were after hundereds or thousands I might suggest differently.
Or you could talk to your credit card company to see if you have any way to get your money back as they must have paid out on an invalid card.0 -
Thanks for your reply
Yeah I've already paid the collectors, but it seems ridiculous as i don't think this was a fault of mine, its their stupid system which allowed this to happen in the first place, so i don't think i should be paying £5 over the odds over two years later0 -
Hi all,
This is just to let you know that this incident is by no means isolated.
1&1 are routinely operating in a corrupt way.
I am a UK domain & Internet expert, and I myself have been affected by 1&1's malicious operating procedures.
There is a whole catalogue of rogue claims against people, some who haven't even had dealings with the company!
I am pondering on preparing a case to take to the OFT as they should not be allowed to continue ripping off customers.
If anyone else has been affected by 1&1, please either reply here or send me a PM with infos, and I will duly note them.
Thanks.

FWIW, whenever they've automatically renewed one of my domains, they've sent an email about 6 weeks beforehand telling me that it's would soon happen, and asked that I check that my credit card details are up-to-date.Stompa0
-
Mmm, i dont think they have any way to check? I know the domain register im with sends me e-mail every 6 months asking me to check my details are up to date.0
-
One&One automatically renew the domains, I have domains with One&One and have no problems with this, it at least prevents you from forgetting to renew.
If you don't want to renew, you can log in to contract.oneandone.co.uk at anytime and select you no longer want the domain, it will then expire at the end of the period you have paid for.
They do send you an email weeks before and if you confirmed details with Nominet they send out details too.
Don't know why people complain when the system is their for out benefit. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
This is not to do with the renewal of the domain though, its the initial payment. Or at least i think thats the case, i have paid the collectors but it takes 24-48 hours to go onto 1and1's system and then i can ask them whats been happening.0
