Hi
My current family box is starting to show signs that it may be on the way out soon.
Can anyone point me in the direction of good deal on a reasonable brand/model?
Have posted this in other forums. There really ought to be one for main consumer appliances deals. Quite a surprising and obvious 'gap' on this site.

What's your budget
Do you currently have Freeview, Virgin Media or Sky?
Do you have any games consoles?
Do you watch DVD's?
Answering these will give a helper a clearer picture of what you use your tv for and can give a better recommendation.0 -
To continue the interrogation, will you be subscribing to an HD service soon or in the future, or a Blue Ray player or games console? That gum you like is coming back in style.0

Actually, being a genuine poster, I shall try my best to answer individually.
I use the box only for watching TV programmes plus the odd recording on DVD or VHS.
I currently have Virgin Media cable.
My budget is not sky high, so the cutting edge of high tech is not something which would interest me - but I'm prepared to pay whatever it takes to achieve reasonable quality/reliability/longevity.0 -

Ebuyer had an excellent deal on a 42" FULL 1080p HD tv for £499, just checked and its now gone up to £539, but still an excellent price (uses an LG screen)
If you only have standard definition SKY / cable etc, the picture won't look half as good as a CRT tv (but this will true of pretty much any HD LCD TV)0 -

Yep, that's progress for you. The nerds triumph while the rest of us suffer.0 -
Give it a year or so and there should be a fair bit of HD programming on Freesat/freeview. Should cheer you up a bit!0

The point of the question was that there is a difference between HD ready, and Full HD (1080p), the former being cheaper at the moment.
I'd have a look at some sets in the stores and ask to be shown the set with a SD/Freeview picture. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
I'm truly sorry to have bored you all with this thread.
It's just that the mods seem to think such a question doesn't belong to to any other forum and have removed it from e.g. 'in my home'. After all, that is to do, as Martin sees it, with electrical goods and appliances and therefore they are saying he's wrong to think this includes TVs.
Obviously you will agree with them that this is a question to do with technical matters..?0 -
