  • i managed to get a warm front grant to replace my central heating system - problem was to meet the criteria we had to have no heating or hot water, we moved into the house in january & had to wait till the end of August for it to actually be fitted! I had to borrow electric heaters & blankets, shower at work, my parents had to bath my 4yr old, do my washing & dishes for me!!!!!

On the plus side i saved about £2k

Smile - it confuses people! :D
  • Over the last few years I have had a disabled facilities grant to replace bath with level access shower and install a stairlift and a ramp to front door for wheelchair access.

A Warm Front grant to insulate the house and also hot water boiler.

A grant to replace rendering of outside of house because of penetrating damp.

I have just had a grant approved to replace my defunct storage heaters.

On each occasion it has taken about a year from needs assessment to commencement of work.

I would not otherwise have been able to get this work done. Grants amounted to approx £25k

Hi, Reently a boiler has been fitted from Warm front grant. Does anyonw know are they allowed to take the old boiler with them? After all the boiler it is mine and I previously bought it. Thanks M
  • When's the show on - don't want to miss it!

It would be good to not only promote the good side of these grants, but also the negative side ie long waits for assessment and work (6 months average), shoddy work, extra costs above grants)
  • I had a warm front grant for a new boiler. I wish I had taken a loan and paid for the work myself. They left a nut unscrewed in an upstairs radiator, in a spare room, when they put the inhibitor into the system, the boiler kept losing pressure but they were not interested (I now know this indicates a leak in the system) by the time I discovered the leak water was coming through the ceiling and hundreds of pounds worth of damage was caused to my house. Warm Front denied responsibility claiming that they did not go into that room (despite the fact that I watched the engineer go in there twice) and claiming I must have had other plumbing work after they fitted the boiler and that plumber was responsible. That was nonsense as the boiler was fitted only two days before Easter, and the water came through over the Easter weekend.

Since then they have refused to respond to letters - including letters from my MP and trading standards.

Its a great idea when it works, which is probably for many people, but these people are above the law and have the backing of DEFRA - they are untouchable when things go wrong.
I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.

I would be interested to know some more information about the grant to replace rendering because of penetrating damp. Thanks.

I think the first step would be to phone her local Council's Social Services department, to get an assessment.

I'm sure she would be entitled to a fair bit of help.

    Hope this helps... ;)

she will be entitled to help - is she a council tenant, private tenant, or does she own her own home??

social services is definately the first point of call, followed by age concern.

local citizens advice is also good for getting something stirred up; they will point you in the direction of everyone you can go to for help. is she claiming all the right benefits etc?? pension credit, council tax rebate, rent assistance, again citizens advice are the people to talk to. she may also be able to apply for a community care grant which doesnt need to be paid back. let us know how you get on,xxx

I got a grant for loft insulation & cavity wall insulation (don't want to be on telly tho!) and thought they were fabulous. They did it all within 2 - 3 months, no hassle, all on the same day too. And then an inspector called a couple of weeks afterwards to check it was all done properly before it was signed off.
Can't recommend the service highly enough actually. It's not all bad.
