PC switching itself off

Hi all,

Specs : Novatech PC - P4 3.2 (800 FSB), 2 x 512 RAM, 160G HDD, CD Drive, DVD-RW drive.

About 6 weeks ago I had a problem with my PC. During use it simply switched itself off - no BSOD, nothing, just complete power off as if it had been switched off at the socket. If left for a while I was able to boot-up again but it would only last for 10-15 minutes at the most before the same thing happened again.

Needless to say, the PC was outside of its warranty period.

I 'phoned Novatech's technical support (lifetime support but pricey number!) and they eventually came to the conclusion that it was either the PSU or the motherboard. I ordered a new PSU and replaced it myself (quite chuffed as I'd never done anything like this before and there seemed to be wires everywhere!). Hooray, everything worked again as it should. :)

However, last night I experienced exactly the same problem again.

I know I could just go for the 'replace the motherboard' option. However, why did replacing the PSU appear to fix the problem for 6 weeks? Any ideas?

Maybe a Faulty PSU, even a replacement can be faulty.

Strangely enough my son's PC did exactly the same thing this morning!

He was happily playing on one of his games when all of a sudden it switched off! No error message, nothing. I had to flip the main switch at the back to get it to boot up again, which it did fine, but we shortly switched it back off as he'd got annoyed because his game hadn't been saved so not sure if this will be a recurrent problem or a one off.

His PC is not even a year old yet and is one I built myself so I'm interested to ready any replies you get as to the possible cause of this. Sorry I can't be of any help though! :)

Ahhhh now that could be a possible reason, especially as he never turns the darned thing off (well, neither do I but mine seems fine :D) and it does sit pretty close to the boiler, although it's rarely on in the summer unless someone is using hot water (combi boiler). I'll see how it goes next time he switches it on and will consider moving it if necessary.

Just a thought, he has a fairly high-power graphix card installed but I never added any further cooling fans, only the usual PSU and CPU fans cooling it down, so could this be the problem?

nah I get a can off compressed air £9.00 and blow the PC out and use a soft brush to remove any stubborn dust.

I really should invest in one of those cans as both PC's could do with a really good clean-up. I have actually been known to use the hoover in the past (to clear the base and dust collected on cables etc, not the actual components) but I know I'm incredibly lucky I didn't cause further problems :o

  • Thanks for the comments so far.

I suppose it was quite hot about 6 weeks ago too (from memory). There are 3 fans - PSU, CPU, and 1 at the back of the case near the vents. What else could I do? (I'd already moved the PC further out on the desk so the rear wasn't as close to the wall).

Did you install the extra fan yourself Richie or was it already in there?
