Yes, I think that mostly people copy straight from tape to DVD disc without putting it on the PC. They use a DVD recorder or a combi.

But you could copy to DVD-RW with a DVD recorder then transfer it to the PC hard drive for editing before finally burning it to a DVD+/-R

I don't know how to copy from VHS straight to a PC. Maybe someone else will come up with an answer.

    Edit.
You need to know how to copy vhs to pc because you have a dvd burner in your pc but you don't have a video recorder - is that what you mean?

    Bumpity bump.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Maybe the answer is to fit a TV card in the computer and capture the video from there.:undecided

I've ripped a few videos to DivX format but DVD would not be much different.

You would need a capture card with the facility to accept analogue inputs. In my case I have a Compro TV card which is a cheap digital TV tuner card which also has analogue video input. For sound you have to hook up the VCR's stereo output to your sound card using an adapter.

The Compro card records video and saves it on the computers hard disk in MPEG2 format, which is handy as that is the format that DVD uses.

Unfortunately, you can't just burn the MPEG2 file to a DVD and have it play in a normal DVD player. To get it into a format that a DVD player will recognise you will have to run it through a DVD authoring program like this http://www.dvdstyler.de/ .

Its not as simple as hooking up a DVD recorder, although its not that complicated once you run through a couple. I wouldn't recommend it for total technophobes though...

You might be able to find capture cards which make it easier than the one I have.

I was thinking along those lines.
But if a VHS machine was plugged into the aerial socket of your Compro TV card and it was tuned to the VHS's channel would you be able to save it to hard disk as MPEG2?

As it is now, can you record TV programmes onto your hard disk as MPEG2?

Edit I'm gonna answer my own question. Your card is a DIGITAL tuner. It would need to be an ANALOG tuner.

I can record Freeview TV stations to the disk. Or I can record VHS video's but not through the aerial connection - you connect a composite or s-video cable from your VCR to the card. It has some sort of hardware MPEG2 encoding because although the machine its on is quite slow today (an AthlonXP 3200) it copes with real time encoding at DVD resolution if you want (720x576). The PC's processor would really struggle with doing that alone in real time.

    Yes, I understand you.
Video (not RF) output from VHS goes to PC card which encodes to MPEG2.
Then meets up with separate audio feed later.

So the OP's original question isn't trivial.
No wonder there weren't any other replies.:D
