I recieved an email from Powergen today detailing the increased energy charges. It also stated the following:

On your next bill, you'll also see an extra charge. That's because, with many newly built houses, an independent network connects your home to Transco, the gas delivery network. This means we pay Transco and the independent network to deliver gas to your home and while some suppliers recover this expense through their gas prices, we prefer being open and charging separately. Our charge will be £42 a year (inc.VAT).

This seems a bit hefty. Do other companies charge for this? It makes it difficuilt to sompare prices on uswitch and the like as I have never seen a field for IGT supplies.

Looking at it another way, do other companies hide this in their prices.
You should compare total costs across several suppliers to get an answer to your question. Where your supplier distributes the money is really not under your control but if including the charge still means your price is favorable then it's probably not hefty.
If on the other hand it means you are paying a high price, then it's time to transfer though with all the increases going on it may be worth holding back a few months.
Increases come around Autumn as useage of gas/elec increases during the winter for virtually everyone.

Had the same thing from them - looked at n-power, as the comparison sites say that they're the cheapest for me. They detail their IGT prices http://www.npower.com/at_home/forms/pricesandlegalpopup/site_latestPrices.aspx & it's a difference of 0.69p/kWh but only on the first 4572 kWh = £31. Still cheaper than Powergen's £42.

I have only lived here for just over a year and although I knew we had a IGT gas supply I never realised that they cost you more until this message from Powergen. I will have to do some research on the other suppliers to find if any savings are worth the hassel of switching.

Sadly, all suppliers will charge you the IGT if it applies to your property. It will either be itemised or hidden in their rates.

Powergen are still one of the cheapest, even after their recent price rises.

ALL suppliers will be passing the price rises on - their margins will only be around 4%, so they aren't going to absorb the massive wholesale price rises - they all pay them to certain extents, it just depends when they are liable for them, based on a) their advance market purchases, b) their own electricity generation/gas fields and c)any hedge market 'betting' they have made.

EDF worked out cheapest for me & don't make an IGT charge. Only other company that didn't seem to was British Gas, but their prices don't work out as well for me. EDF here I come...

When I spoke to EDF they told me they didn't supply IGT customers?

Just spoken to a lovely lady at EDF who said they have lots of IGT customers & they don't charge different prices.

Going back to EDF they now think that they accept IGT customers.

Trying to do a price comparison when you are an IGT customer is like the 13th task of Hercules. Even if you can find a company that accepts IGT customers, they invariably don't state if they charge extra or not. Some, don't even quote the extra charges when speak to the call centre, and only come up with the information when poked with a sharp stick.

before you consider EDF (London Energy, Seeboard Energy, SWEB) its worth pointing out they have just increased their prices also. Was that taken into consideration on the comparison ?

Yes I used the switching sites, then got the new prices direct & did it in Excel. EDF's new prices don't affect the online accounts - they were changed in June.
