£20 debit card payment not showing on my account

Options
Hi all,

I bought £20 petrol at my local supermarket pay at the pump last Friday and it isn't showing on my account as yet. I check my account daily online and so far, this transaction is not showing on my account, although debit card payments from Saturday & Monday have cleared.

The other thing is I always check the available balance against the current balance to see if the amount of debit card payments due to come out match the receipts, and the difference was £1 (not £20 - the cost of the petrol). I put another £20 in my car last night (different store, another pay at the pump though). Last night, the available balance was showing a difference of £2 from the balance and today its back to £1.

I'm baffled - has this happened to anyone else and did the transaction clear eventually?

Thanks

rb

    Hi,

Yes this is a pretty regular occurance actually. Well more regular than you might at first think. I made a payment with My Debit card on 7th July for £200 and the debit has only just shown up on my account today. Immediately after the transaction was made there was a difference of £200 between my current and available balance but 3 days later the available balance went back up as if i'd never even made the transaction!. I have had one debit card transaction take a month before it showed up!.

Apparently what happens is when you use your debit card the funds aren't taken there and then but are 'reserved'. The person you have paid then has 3 days (usually only 1 day for switch/maestro/solo) to actually claim the funds. If they don't do it within this timeframe then the money will be 'unreserved' from your account and thus available for you to spend again.

The money will be taken from your account though, its just up to the retailer when they choose to do so!.

    Hi,

This happened to me last year. It took 6 months for a transaction to show up on my bank account after using my debit card in Sainsbury's.

You stated that you paid at the pump. When you put your card in the pump it only checks whether card has been reprted lost or stolen. ( this is why they won't accept solo cards etc). To do this they put through a test amount of £1. If this is agreed they then let you have up to a set amount (£60 in my local Tesco).
If for some reason the link is broken between the pump and the server it might take some days for the debit to show (if not weeks). As long as the money remains in your account don't worry.

It's happened to me a few times with Sainsbury's where it's taken over a week for a transaction to show on my account. Can't recall it happening anywhere else though.

I've used pay and pump for ages and didn't know that. I always use my credit card though but I assume they do the same with those. Presumably they then simply don't collect the £1 transaction which is why I have neve been aware of it.
  • Now I understand why I always have a difference between available balance and acual balance. We paid for holiday car hire last week and the balance showed it taken but now balance has gone up and they haven't taken their money yet. Must be why.

Correct. As all transactions using Solo have to be authorised by retailer to available balance before proceeding, pump facility does not have this and is the reason why you see signs that they cannot be accepted. I do not know if you can use them in shop to pay for petrol because I've never had one.

    Hi Eric,

thanks for the info - I did pay at the pump and that explains the £1 then. I had no idea that was what happened - the money is still in my account though. I'll just keep checking.

    Thanks again
