The Mods will shift this to Motoring, in a minute - you'll get better response there!!

Anywy.... check out https://www.honestjohn.co.uk look in his 'This weeks Best Deals', in the NEWS link, on the left of his site.

You mention buying on line, but I'd suggest THIS action....

Work out which car you want - right down to model/colour/trim etc. THEN do your homework on line, for best deals, available. THEN get down to your local main dealer & ALSO the one who's HIS nearest competitor. THEN get THEM to do their work, to get YOUR business!!

You will stand better chance if you can be flexible on cars that they have available straight away, rather than factory ordering a specific one, for you. So if you're flexible on colours, worth thinking on that, too!

Any dealer that you can find, as local as possible, offering maybee a few £00 over the www price, will be worth buying from. You'll build up a better relationship for future business, service, repair, warranty & your next car!!

    Hi rp5017,

As vansboy says you'll get a better response on the Motoring Board, so I'll move your thread over there.

The motor trade is pretty damn quiet at the moment so you should be able to sort out a decent deal. Try a few brokers to get their prices and then see what your local dealer will do.

    A few possibles include

In my experience, this is definately the best time of year for bargains. I'd never buy "online" though - just a personal thing.

My advice is to first decide which dealer you "want" to buy from - perhaps based on recommendation, reputation for after-sales service, etc. Visit this one second or third (with some initial deals you've been offerred) and form the relationship to get them interested.

Make sure they have all your contact details so that they can "bother" you every other day while you're looking at other dealers' offerings. Keep your preferred supplier informed of the deals you are being offered when they call you but do not re-visit your preferred supplier in person until you have the "deal of a lifetime" from one of their competitors - preferably within 10-15 miles or so.

Rather than post up a whole load of text again about the bargain I got using the above method, have a look at the following thread, particularly my post #8.

    Good luck.

Yorkshire boy - yes this is the best time of year to get a bargain as everyone is waiting for the new reg, however i do think your method is seriously flawed.

If you keep visiting the same dealership trying to get a better deal each time they will treat you as a window shopper/tyre kicker and probably just give you lip service to get you out of the dealership.

You are better off searching through the online deals to find out the very best available on your chosen car, print off the details then walk into your dealer - show him the details and say if you can match it we can do business here and now. If they match it great, if not you go home and purchase the car off the net.

Also just because you are going to get the vehicle serviced there doesn't mean you have to buy it from there, the salesman doesn't really care once you've paid your money and he's had his slice, similarly the service department don't care where you bought it from either.

If you read my post again you will see that I only advocate visiting your preferred dealership twice; once to make initial contact with your best price after visiting 2 or 3 other places (and at the risk of repeating myself - to get them pestering me), and finally the second time is when you walk in with your pen saying "I'm signing today if you can beat this price".

You will know you're taking the best price to your preferred dealer when the others are shaving off £25 or offering 1/2 price first service. This is your clue that they've gone as far as they can.

As to my plan being "seriously flawed", I got a £15.5K Mondeo for £11.5K with 3 years 0% interest. If that's the result of a "seriously flawed" plan, I'm glad I couldn't think of a better one at the time!

Yes paying £11.5k for a £15.5k mondeo could be classed as a good deal but no-one actually ever pays the 15.5k - especially on old stock that is about to become obsolete stock.

    Have a look at https://www.autoebid.co.uk
They run a reverse auction and dealers compete to offer you the lowest price. They do charge a fee if a dealer beats the reserve price or if you buy the car, but it saves a look of work.

This other thread which I posted in mentions problems with autoebid.

They can be cheap but it would seem that they can also fail to deliver at the agreed price.

After trawling around the internet a lot, I have ended up buying my new car from my second closest dealer. The first closest dealer said he couldn't come close to drivethedeal's price ... nor even the price offered by the second closest dealer. His price was £600 higher - d'oh! And this is a dealer we have used before - so much for the value of our past business.

The more local dealer is also likely to lose the servicing business as I'm going to be inclined to use the supplying dealer instead as the distance difference is not that great.
