Can anyone help?
Following a recent thread question, I downloaded the latest version of OO today - only to find that I was left simply with an OO installation files icon on my desktop and no icon for accessing the actual wordprocessor.
I had a message saying that OO 'had been installed'.
Can anyone suggest what's happened or whether I'm missing something simple? This state of affairs is no good to me.

This might be a dumb question but I can't work out from your post.
You download it... but did you then install it?0 -
also have rebooted your computer for the changes to take place0

Try clicking on start, programs and look for openoffice there. I can't remember whether it puts icons on your desktop by default. This does assume you actually ran the installation program after downloading it. I assume you did as you had a message saying it was installed. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -

OK, you download the installer from OOo. When you run it, it extracts the installation files to your desktop. You need to double click on one of these to actually install it. You'll get an installation the same as you'd expect from any other program, asking where you want to install etc.
Bonkers I know but that's how it is. Welcome to the wonderful world of Open Source software.
Once installed, you can delete those files off the desktop.0 -
Ok this is what I have.
On my desktop is an icon calling itself OO installation files.
When I click on it I see a dozen different files of different sizes with different names:
3 x 'file folder'
2 x 'application'
4 x 'cabinet file'
1 x 'windows installer package'
1 x 'application'
1 x 'configuration settings'
That's it. There's no message advising me to reboot nor any indication as to what I should do next. I'm confused. Any ideas?0 -
The one that says 'Windows installer package' looks promising.
What happens if you double-click that one?Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.0 -
if you want an easy way to install OO, go to http://portableapps.com/suite and download Portable Apps, amongst the (many) apps it includes is OO, if you only want a good word processor it also includes AbiWord.
It also has the advantage it can be run from a USB stick on any PC.====0 -

I get the 'installation wizard' which offers me the choice of 'modifying, repairing or removing' OO 2.3
Do people think I should just remove the programme and try downloading again from a different server?0 -
You could remove it and start again.
What I do is create a folder on the C drive called Open Office and then change the extraction folder to point there. I find it makes the installation much easier.
Once the files are extracted, the installation should continue post hasteIt's taken me years of experience to get this cynical0 -
I've been having exactly this problem:
The programme installs and then you're left just with the desktop installation files icon, no icon for wordprocessor or any way of actually using the thing!
IS it necessary to restart the PC - there hasn't been any prompt to that effect.0
