recipe for dog food

Does anyone know if it is OK to feed a small dog on just cooked beef mince, would this be a balnced diet, should I add vegtables, pasta, vitamin drops?

Does anyone have a recipe?

My mums dog eats alot of liver but boy does it make his farts stink. When he was a puppy he would only eat tinned tuna and then he went through a phase of only eating liver... now he gets liver and dog food and hes a healthy little springer spaniel so i cant see the harm in but im not an expert.

Mam and Dad cant be too concerned as they used to breed dogs and show at crufts.

No! Cooked beef mince does not constitute a balanced diet! It would be too high in protein, and too low in carbohydrate and vitamins. You would need to add veg and vitamin supplements to make it balanced. I understand feeding BARF (Bones And Raw Food) is time-consuming and not always cheaper.

There are a variety of for and against arguments against feeding your dog a BARF diet - google BARF and you'll see what I mean.

Feeding your dog a vegetarian diet is not a good idea, but vegatables do form part of a balanced diet.

Well done Squeaky. I've saved that link! My father (farmer) always said never feed dgs on tinned food - it rots their teeth and makes their breath smell. I have read somewhere too that they should eat basically what we do (i.e. when we are eating a 'balanced' diet). Cats should have high protien diets but dogs a mix of carbs, protein and veg, just like you say.
My dog enjoys pasta and rice but will not touch spuds in any form (fussy eater for a labrador!). I give her liver, mince, chicken pulled from the carcus, tuna etc. All cheap and what we would eat. The only thing I give her and I wouldn't eat is gristle!! Urgh

Cats in the wild eat a more balanced diet than you might think. The mice they catch have a stomach full of grains - and that's how the cats get theirs. I heard a tv thing that said that actually you should feed your cat on the cheaper tinned foods because they're padded out with cereals and so are better for your cat than the higher quality "pure" foods.

Of course tripe is a good natural food for dogs and can be mixed with a mixer or complete dog food if you ca stand the smell it can be bought at Pets at home and other stores I buy the bigger packs and then individually pack it into enough for each day, they love it but put a pag on your nose and stock up on air freshner for the house
