Replacing kitchen cuupboard doors and worktops on a budget?

Hi
First time on this board so please be gentle, we are looking to move in the not so near future but before we do we want to update our kitchen, we need replacement doors, worktops and a couple of cupboards - the rest of the cupboards are ok. We have around £1000 to spend and have been looking at online sites that offer discount cupboard doors etc and I just wondered if anybody has had any good or bad experiences with these sorts of companies or who you would recommend, if anybody.
Or any other ideas for updating our kitchen from the high street??
Any ideas/thoughts very welcome, thanks

This time last year b&q had a clearout with cupboard doors, i bought 15 of them in various sizes for £26 inc delv.Found the link in this site. What i`m saying is keep a look out on their website when they sell off old stock.Might be worth just holding back.

B&Q almost always have clearance doors in stock. Usually around £6 for a standard 60cm, I'm sure. Go and look at your local, big, B&Q. Not in the showroom bit but in the actual aisles where they stock the doors - look for the white and red stickers :)

I could buy an entire kitchen for under £1000 from B&Q, so you should be able to do it easily! Make sure your doors are the same size though.

Would your existing doors paint well? You can buy cupboard paint too. I thought it would be rubbish, but H used it once as a 'surprise' and it was fabulous. The doors in question were already solid wood, so the paint will take readily, but it might be worth giving it a go on your doors first, especially if they're only go to get skipped.

Have a look for damaged worktops too in B&Q, you can often get a hefty dicount and if you know the sizes you need, you can see if they will fit without the damaged part making a difference. We've bought worktops cheap where the damage is at the back and underneath - totally invisible! It's worth buying a new sink and tap :) Accessories rock!
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
  • Be very careful changing the doors etc in an old kitchen. My OH and I did this and were assured that the new doors (from B & Q) would fit the original carcasses (also B & Q), most of them did but lots of fiddly bits and pieces didn't and it turned into a bit of a nightmare really. I'm not saying don't do it but it's not as easy as these DIY shows would have you believe.

What about those specialist companies, or MFI? Do they end up costing the earth?

I tried looking at MFI etc but they only sold whole kitchens from what I could gather.

Thank you everybody for your replies and hints.

The companies I was looking at are:-

    http://www.discountkitchenfactory.co.uk/carcasses.htm

    and

    http://www.doors.homestylekitchens.co.uk/matchingaccessories.html

they do the size doors we need but seem quite expensive but maybe thats the MSE in me :rotfl:
  • To do a kitchen really cheaply see if you've got a "Freecycle" in your area, you access it through Yahoo. It's a site set up to help with cutting down on people just taking things to tips and to recycle them instead. You can get new kitchen units - occasionally or old ones but still in very good condition. There are some fantastic things going and it's brilliant for getting rid of stuff you don't want anymore! People come and collect the item/s from you - couldn't be easier!

Nothing wrong with a bit of sticky backed plastic on the doors to change the style. Just add a few new handles from the bargain box at B&Q and Bob's your Uncle!

  • Hey
We are doing just that getting fitted this monday.
We have bought our kitchen from http://www.wickes.co.uk/icat/kitcheninst

"Now we've more great news! Spend £200 or more to receive 33% off your total Kitchen Cabinets purchase price, or spend £600 or more and receive an incredible 40% off!"

We do have a small kitchen but all new units only came to £400 after discount. You pick the style you like then u pick the carcus and the doors, hinges and handles come with it. Their cheapest range the miami only costs £250 for 8 units.
One thing we did find which you might like to do, if your spending £400-£500 before discount put it though as 2 lots then they both get the 33% off rather then a total of 33% off if that makes sence
Its a take away kitchen so have to fit it yourself or get a company in. We are getting ours fitted for just over £200.
The worktops are sooo nice and only £50ish depending on design.
The people in store have been so helpful and went though my order to make sure i had everything i needed.

    Hope this is of use.

    Deb, your maths don't work???

If I was spending a total of £450, and I put it through in one transaction, and I got 33% off, then I'd get a discount of £148.50.

If I split it as you suggested, say into one transaction of £240 and one of £210, I'd get discounts as follows:
    £240, 33% off, discount is £79.20
    £210, 33% off, discount is £69.30
    Total discount is £148.50

You don't need to split your transaction into smaller chunks to get a double discount, you're still getting a 33% discount no matter if it is 1/3 of a whole pie or 1/3 of two halves of a pie, the discount will remain the same.

I replaced my doors with b and q ones. When they are on offer half price they were cheaper then any internet company I could find. I didn't have any problem fitting them either and they have lots of sizes and you can just buy the doors.
