Some MS programmes not working! Virus found - what next?

Hi

Firstly things always happen after one of the kids has been on the PC. GRRRRHHH.

Anyway found I couldn't open any MS Office programs or associated files last night. Thought I'd run the McAfee AV s/ware, that didn't want to work. So ran the AVG scanner, and bingo, it finds 5-6 dodgy files one was a Trojan, I didn't note the names at the time, just went ahead and cleaned them up. This still hasn't solved the problem with MS office or the McAfee s/ware. Any ideas as to what to try next (apart from banning the little darlings from the PC!).

Many thanks

Best thing to do is to look at the Sticky threads at the top of the Techie forum, as there's loads of advice there.

Also, try to avoid having more than one AV program (e.g. AVG and McAfee) installed on a PC - they can sometimes fight with one another.

And... make sure that your PC is always fully patched via Windows update - most malware these days target PCs that are not patched.

Thanks will check them out. PC is patched upto date; yes I agree about AV s/w, but good job I had the freebie one on as well as it got rid of the nastie beasties!

It would be a lot easier if you give a bit more info about how they are failing to work. Do you get error messages?

I would just reinstall MS office.

OK will collect the messages and post them on here once PCinllin (sp) has finished it's second run through. I realise my information has been a bit scant! Thx fwor!

I would install MS Office again, but it works of a fashion, if you use the executable file in C:\Programs! Plus mcafee doesn't work from the start/task bar, and ZoneAlarm although working will not allow me to install the latest update.

The error message when trying to use any MS Office application is

    Problem with Shortcut

(Red Cross) This action is only valid for products that are currently installed

The error message when accessing McAfee console is

    Error

Could not access the local computer. Confirm you have appropriate privileges and the product is correctly installed.

Hope that this allows someone to shed some light on this, have removed all the nastie beasties following the advice on the sticky on this forum. Wow what a way to spend a Friday night!

    Cheers

I've had similar-looking problems with broken shortcuts. The following will probably fix it:

The McAfee problem may be more worrying. Some of the trojans start by searching for Antivirus programs and try to disable them, which may be what has happened to McAfee. If you have a working copy of AVG installed, I'd try to uninstall McAfee (check on their website how to do this, as some AV programs can be a pain to uninstall). You can then swap them back if things have returned to normal.

Sounds like it may be Trojan.Lager. See here:

However, bear in mind I found that site by simply Googling, I have absolutely no idea whether it is legitimate. Consequently, I'd be very very cautious about using their removal tool - it could potentially be bogus and cause many more problems than it fixes. I'd definitely seek further advice before using it (or any other similar removal tool found on the net).

    Hi fwor

Well it sort of nearly worked! I think I'll re-install MS Office.

As for the Trojan it was Pakes. Picked up with the first AV run through, but not picked up by McAfee. The suggestions on the boards sticky picked up various adware/spyware, (I do run Spybot weekly so not many there).

    Thx 4 help
