Can people who have installed some of the magnetic and electronic devices to reduce the lime scale build up in the household water system, on taps, kettles, and so on, please give some advice on their effectiveness, installation, running costs and safety as regards drinking water?

I live in the Cotswolds and fitted a Salamander Microwave 22 months ago. Similar to the ScaleWatcher. I can't believe the difference. Used to have to clean the shower head at least every 3 months and haven't had to touch it since. And the kettle is still clean. I bought mine from Travis Perkins at a discount for £49.94 but think the retail price is around £80. I think if you go direct to Salamander they will sell for around what I paid. I seem to remember being told that when I contacted them after I bought mine.
In addition to having a 5 year warranty against faulty workmanship it also has a 6 months unconditional satisfaction or money back guarantee. (Proof of purchase required)

I had better say that I don't have any connection with this company whatsoever except for being a very satisfied customer.0 -

We fitted a sesi electrolytic one to our rising main when we first moved in to our new place 7 months ago, cleaned the showers at the time and have not seen any limescale since.
I must admit i never expected it to work but it only cost a few pounds new on ebay so it was worth a try.
So far its the best fiver i have spent all year0 -
We have one of those £1000 ones - its really good - had it for nine years with no trouble. I'd say the main downside is that removing lime from the water (in our area at any rate) leaves the other minerals in the water more aggressive and since we have mains pressure hot water (not a combi boiler - we've got a high pressure cylinder) we need to have the sacrificial anode replaced every year as it gets completely eaten away.
I'm impressed with what I've read about those electrolytic ones though. If our machine ever breaks down I'd definately try a cheap one before calling the engineers out...still raining0
