Hard water remover

Options
Hi, I live in a really hard water area, and OH picked up a leaflet on Plumber de-scaler that appear to wrap around the pipes?! and operate on a battery. I was wondering if anyone had had any experience, good or bad of these or could recommend/suggest anything else? I live in ground floor flat, so may be limited to what I can do. All help greatly appreciated though....

Was looking at these earlier today and some DIY forums - these seem to be popular and have good feedback.

I would speak to a local plumber ansd see how much getting a proper water softener would cost. Will improve limescale washing etc. Only the cost of a phone call to find out cost.

    Hi
I also live in a hard water area (North Kent) and i have fitted an electronic water conditioner, ScaleWatcher, in my house. Basically its a small unit with coils which fit around the water pipe located underneath the sink. Its connected to the mains and it costs about 2 quid a year to run. How effective is it? Well i was a bit sceptical at first BUT i was pleasantly surprised after the built up scale on my shower head and around the taps began to disappear after 4 weeks...i still get scale now but it is of the 'soft' type and can be easily wiped away with a cloth. The downside? well its quite expensive (price 140-280 quid, depending on size) but you do get a 6 month money-back satisfaction guarantee so you can return it back after a few months and get your money refunded. Website is https://www.scalewatcher.co.uk
Hope this info has helped you.

    Well Murtle,

I was a sad git the other week, and was watching one of those shopping channels on Sky, when the "Scale Wizzard" came on. We also live in a hard water area the the Cotswolds. Anyway I bought one, 92 quid. Fitted it, it has only been 2 weeks, but...... the kettle is definately clearing, and things seem to be happening. I am trying to think of the website I ordered it from, will have to get back to you that. If you have Sky take a look at the shopping channels, the ad repeats every so often. It is the cheapest version I have seen around.

I also live in the Cotswolds and fitted a Salamander Microwave 22 months ago. Similar to the ScaleWatcher. I can't believe the difference. Used to have to clean the shower head at least every 3 months and haven't had to touch it since. And the kettle is still clean. I bought mine from Travis Perkins at a discount for £49.94 but think the retail price is around £80. I think if you go direct to Salamander they will sell for around what I paid. Iseem to remember being told that when I contacted them after I bought mine.
In addition to having a 5 year warranty against faulty workmanship it also has a 6 months unconditional satisfaction or money back guarantee. (Proof of purchase required)

I had better say that I don't have any connection with this company whatsoever except for being a very satisfied customer.
  • I'm intrigued, it's about 15 -20 years since I first saw the electronic scale reducers at the Ideal Home show. I noted down the patent number with a view to making one of my own. My scepticism was sealed however, when neither the patent office nor my employers patent department could find any record of it!!
I've also seen much cheaper permanent magnet ones in B&Q, but if they work that doesn't really square with the description of how the hydroflow ones are supposed to work.
