i'm going to buy another laptop from dell and as i'm going for a vostro they only offer windows xp pro or vista business ....i personally am leaning towards xp pro but my only concerns are the suitability of either OS for day to day 'domestic' use as opposed to the business model they were produced for.
to be clearer will they be ok for video , music, surfing etc
any help greatly received

XP pro for me as the premier choice on any lappie.. Vista is far too heavy on the resources, whereas Xp is much more gentle, which means you will have less battery consumption.0

Either is suited for domestic use, and usually have less limitations than the home version.
My personal preference is XP Pro, due to the fact that it is now a mature operating system, there will be a new service pack 3 for it shortly. Many of the bugs that are in the initial release version have been found. Yes there are still bugs being found but that will be normal for ALL operating systems.
Vista is relatively new, has many probs, including not being able to run some of the programs that XP can run. It also seems to need a higher spec computer than XP to run as fast. Give it a couple of years to mature.
If you buy a laptop with XP, then at a later stage you could update it to Vista.
I have a laptop with XP Pro and my desk top is W98SE which still does all the jobs I throw at it.
XPPRO on the laptop has been stable, and never had a problem with it other than operator error !, it also runs my WIN98 and DOS programs OK.0 -
I too would recommend XP Pro on a laptop.
It hass all the features of XP Home plus some more where as Vista Business is missing some features over Home versions (such as various media components).0 -
Hammy, I would recommend XP Pro over Vista for 3 main reasons;
1. Robust platform
2. Full complement of drivers
3. Service Pack 3 for Windows XP will provide many of the security features that Vista includes.
SP3 will make XP the best platform for notebooks for the near future and is expected within the next 2-3 months (probably at the same time as SP1 for Vista).0 -
I have just bought a vostro from dell with Vista business - I chose this mainly as it will not come pre installed with all the usual crap.
Whilst not as mature as XP you can bet that microsoft will either force the change or fix the issues - I am hoping for the latter.0 -
thanks everyone for the replies ...i'm going to go for XP pro ...this site is amazing when you need rapid help to solve a problem
many many thanks

Just to add another vote for XP. My neighbour bought a PC with Vista on it and I've downgraded it to XP because it slowed it down too much.
I used to use Vista but when I built myself a new quad core with 4GB RAM I decided to put XP on. Its just a lot simpler and does the job without all the fancy graphics which slow it all down.0 -

Rubbish. All the media components are there with the exception of Media Center which is just a glorified front end. WMP is still there as is everything else.0 -

Which is quite a good application if you want to be able to watch videos/DVD's through it!
Went into PC World today and most PC's seem to now be sold with TV/remote etc. Even laptops!0
