One for Martin - Reclaim Car Tax Disc Charges ?????

Hi just a thought. But if you renew your car tax over 6 months instead of 12 it works out the APR is over 40%. But the reminder never states this unlike car Insurance which has to despite you technically not using the insurance or even the tax you have pre paid for until 6 months later ?

I hope that makes sence.

So if they arent quoting an APR are they wrong in charging the higher charge ??

Just a thought.

 But it is not APR because you have not got this on credit, you have a choice to pay the full charge for 6 months or 12 months, you cannot get this on credit unlike insurance

I understand what you are saying about the price been more if you pay every 6 months but you have a choice and do not have to pay this extra
  • It's normally a 14% hike for doing it over 6 months...
  • You could pay for 1 year using a 0% card.

The extra charge is an admin charge. I think the only case you could logically put is in the following circumstances

    12 month car A = 140, 6 month car A = 77 so a £7 admin charge over 6 months

    12 month car B = 300, 6 month car B = 165 Admin charge £15

Why is the admin charge different? The work is the same so the admin charge should be the same.

Why is there no admin charge on a 12 mth disc?
What is the admin charge for? All the work is done by computers, it's just a rip off.

If you think it's a rip off, just don't bother taxing your car.

The 'admin charge' works out at 10%. Exactly. Always. So it's not different.

And it's for the convenience of not having to shell out the full year's tax in one go, and for causing the DVLA twice as much admin. If you don't want to pay it buy a 12 month disc and don't get 'ripped off'.

Depending on the time of year, these days it can actually work out cheaper to buy car tax for 6 months rather than 12 months and then once that expires get it for 12 months. This is what i did to save money anyway, This is because you are bypassing the budget date, which has in recent years ussually been a time when tax duty increases. Even with the credit crunch i suspect the best we can hope for is a freeze.

In my case, my car tax was due in August one year, so i only got 6 months worth. When it expired in Feb, i got 12 months worth. the tax duty increased in March but it was 11 months before i was exposed to it!. If i'd got 12 months worth in august, i'd have lost out and had to pay the increased rates just 5 months after they came into effect. It saved a lot of money in my case as i had a high emmsions band engine.

So just goes to show don't automatically think getting 12 months is cheaper regardless of the time of year

You didn't explain why the administration effort needed, would be different depending on the value of the disc. It used to be a flat fee of £5 across all bands. There is no justification for the different charges.

thats a good point, admin doesnt cost anymore to send out a tax disc for a range rover sport than it does to send one out for a diesel fiat panda.
so why should it be a percentage? it should be a flat rate.
