90 Caps | 1.7p per 1 capsule Now £1.49 (Was £2.99)
Special Offers 3 for 2 on selected Vitamins Save 50.00% I've put 12 at £2.99 in my basket and because it is 50% off each cost £1.49 and because it's 3 for 2 I pay only for 8 and get 4 free. 1080 tablets £11.92 works out at 1.1p each
I normally pay £13.50 for 250 X 5000iu from the USA but for those who aren't convinced this is absolutley safe may prefer to make up an effective dose level using the information below by taking several smaller tablets as these are 12.5ug = 500iu. but still these cost only 2.4p per 1000iu
Supplemental intake of 400 IU vitamin D/d has only a modest effect on blood concentrations of 25(OH)D, raising them by 7–12 nmol/L, depending on the starting point. This is generally averaged to 9nmol/L per 400iu.
Prevalence of hypovitaminosis D in the general population was alarmingly high during the winter and spring, which warrants action at a population level rather than at a risk group level. You can see from the average status in the charts at the end of this paper that the average UK adult needs to raise their status to optimal from a Winter low of 40nmol/L
Vitamin D Deficiency: the cause of everything? This link takes you to an hour long presentation to University Medical Student Doctors summarising the current state of Vitamin D research. Bear in mind when considering her supplement recommendations that she works in Saskatoon that although on the same latitude as the UK enjoys 2650hrs sunshine annually while the UK averages 1500hr so the Vitamin d situation there (they also fortify milk products with vit d) is not as bad as here. They are getting 75% more sunshine+fortified milk so will need less from supplements. The doctor on this presentation does explain that because cholecalciferol is fat soluble it needs to be taken with a meal rather than just a glass of water.
As this is Breast Cancer Month (pink ribbon)
Intake of 2000 IU/day of Vitamin D(3), and, when possible, very moderate exposure to sunlight, could raise serum 25(OH)D to 52 ng/ml = 130nmol/L, a level associated with reduction by 50% in incidence of breast cancer, according to observational studies.
If you aren't able to get into Boots you can order online via Quidco and get another bit of cashback.

Although Boots do not state whether it's cholecalceferol or ergocalceferol, I've gone for it as I'm sure you would not have posted the link had it been the latter.0

Although Boots do not state whether it's cholecalceferol or ergocalceferol, I've gone for it as I'm sure you would not have posted the link had it been the latter.
But I started by phoning my local branch and the Pharmacist explained it would be Cholecalciferol as in the dispensary they only supply Ergocalciferol.
Why I asked do you actually dispense a product that isn't as well absorbed as the product you supply on your supplement shelves?
Have your read The case against ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) as a vitamin supplement Lisa A Houghton and Reinhold Vieth ?

Hi Ted
Can I ask which Vit D tablets you are referring to please? I went down to out local boots last night and they did not have much in stock. Went online and could not find the ones you mentioned but I am probably not looking right. As both my mum and dad had cancer and think wee boost of Vit D will not do me any harm. Many thanks.0 -

My local store also had sold out. But it's not showing as out of stock online.
Ignore
"Take one capsule a day with liquid." although you may swallow them with liquid they need to be taken With food Cholecalciferol is fat soluble and therefore needs bile juices working to be absorbed.
Ignore
"Do not exceed the stated daily intake." 400 IU vitamin D/d has only a modest effect on blood concentrations of 25(OH)D, raising them by 7–12 nmol/L, In order to raise status from current (average uk adult dropping from 70nmol/L to 40nmol/L between September and November) to the level (80nmol/L) at which calcium it taken up most effectively or 100nmol/L (the level needed to ensure all systems work unrestricted) or the 130nmol/L see link in post message 1 you need more than one tablet daily.
Ignore Not suitable for children under 12 years. Canadian Pediatric Society recommends
A minimum of 800 IU/day to 1000 IU/day may be needed, with up to 2000 IU/day to 4000 IU/day in special circumstances When Finnish children were given 2000iu/d they virtually all avoided type 2 diabetes.
Nice to see in today's vitamin D newly published research Vitamin D therapy in clinical practice. One dose does not fit all. that some UK doctors are prescribing the EFFECTIVE form of Vit d and have realised the limitations of current recommendations. It will be even better when they finally suss out that the amount of Vitamin d the body actually uses ensures all systems function properly. My weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program

That's interesting Ted.
What's your opinion on Vitamin D in Cod Liver Oil?
I sometimes take these in capsule form.0 -
What's your opinion on Vitamin D in Cod Liver Oil?
I sometimes take these in capsule form.
Pure Icelandic Cod Liver Oil - 1000mg
EPA is 75mg
DHA is 100mg
Vitamin A is 700iu ?
Vitamin D is 90iu
Vitamin E is 1.2mg
If you used a liquid form
Each 5ml (one teaspoonful) serving contains:
Pure Icelandic Cod Liver Oil of which total omega 3 is 920mg
EPA is 345mg
DHA is 460mg
Vitamin A is 967mcg?
Vitamin D is 10.35mcg = 414iu
Natural Source Vitamin E is 5.5mg
You will notice the high Vitamin A content of CLO. In order to standardise the content of supplements the manufacturers may use synthetic Vit A instead of natural, this may cause adverse events so those Dr's who are suggesting people increase their Vitamin d consumption do NOT recommend CLO as a way of doing this. see
Cod Liver Oil and Vitamin A Toxicity
However there is good research showing prolonged use of CLO reduces depression but that is Norwegian research. It is possible the CLO they are using is not messed about with and does NOT contain synthetic vitamin a. (but that is me theorising and not fact) If you look at Nordic Naturals they state
1 teaspoon provides:
EPA: 410 mg
Vitamin A: 650–1500 IU (you can see from this range that the content isn't standardised)
DHA: 625
Vitamin D3: 400 IU
Other Omega-3s: 225 mg
Vitamin E: 30 IU
or Capsules
EPA: 246 mg
Vitamin A: 390–900 IU
DHA: 375 mg
Vitamin1–12 IU
Other Omega-3s: 135 mg
Vitamin E: 40 IU
Low levels of naturally occurring Vitamin A
400iu vitamin D3 (the form in CLO) raises status by between 7-12nmol/L the variation is because the lower your status the more you absorb (12nmol/l per 400iu) and as your status reaches a natural equilibrium the absorption rate drops to 7nmol/L or below. So given 5000iu/d your status will quickly rise at first and then the curve gets less steep as you approach your optimal status.Slide 33 ( 00:17:19 )
The line at the bottom of the chart shows that amounts under 1000iu daily have very little impact at all. Of course every little helps but it's a bit like saving your copper coins and thinking that is going to solve your debt problems while you carry on spending more than you earn.
Your body uses 3000-5000iu/daily so while CLO is a good source of the omega 3's EPA + DHA it is NOT a good source of Vitamin D3 because of the high Vitamin A content makes it inadvisable to take in quantities that would raise your Vitamin D status.

Thanks for the reply Ted
I'll spend some time going over your information when I get some. I know for a fact I get very little Vitamin D due to my work.
Thanks again.0 -

You can now only order one pot of 90 vit d at a time now. This isn't now such a worthwile offer.
You will see from this article Vitamin D Appears to Cut Breast and Colorectal Cancer Risk exactly how much Vitamin D is actually needed to raise your status from the UK winter average to the level associated with lowest cancer incidence. Therefore, although at 3 for 2 + 50% off it was worth buying the Boots tablets, at the current price it's more Moneysaving to import effective strength capsules from the USAMy weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program
