Adding VAT after confirming purchase...

I've got a new phone and been looking for a 4 gig Memory card. I found what I thought was the cheapest and clicked the BIN button.

I saw this screen.

All is good, so I login to paypal to complete the purchase. I then see this in paypal!

The seller has added VAT after the eBay payment review screen!! Luckily the item was immediate payment, so I still had the chance to back out and check the listing. Right enough at the very end of the description in normal text, VAT WILL BE ADDED TO FINAL PRICE & SHIPPING.

It's a bit of a cheap trick IMO - this is a very competitive category, which is often searched by price, so this listing would appear very attractive at first, but is actually £3.50 more than the listing that is the true cheapest.

I'm surprised that eBay allow this, as it is depriving them of FVF's - although paypal will be taking an increased slice of the pie!

This is what happens when buyers don't read item descriptions properly. I don't see how its a cheap trick if its stated in the description that VAT will be added

You might be able to get out of paying the VAT though as I just had a quick look on the ebay community boards and people there are saying that if the VAT number isn't included in the listing you don't have to pay it.

How true that is I don't know. Take a look yourself and see what you make of it.

It's a cheap trick in order to appear at the top of the search results - it just surprises me that eBay have not sought "to improve the buying experience" by listing items in full price order, or at least highlighting in the search results if VAT needs to be added to the final price.

In fact, it would even be nice if eBay displayed the extra VAT in the price confirmation section - as per the first screenshot!

Why wait till the price confirmation, why not just have the software program the VAT into the Bid or BIN price displayed on the listing? Any external EEC buyers can have the VAT removed.

But that would require an Ebay policy which actually cared about the buyers experience, and they couldn't do that could they.

So you're allowed to back out of a BIN sale are you?

No, The seller has the 'Immediate Payment Required' option set & luckily the buyer noticed the problem before completing the purchase.

We recently had the same problem with another seller

Another annoying thing when buying online is the old trick of not showing postage untill youv actually ordered, this sometimes makes a huge difference, its not always the "cheapest" item that is the cheapest when you add postage
  • Any decent seller should show the postage at the bottom of the listing, if not, you should check the price before buying.

    How is that a 'trick'?

Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j

It sounds like roddydogs is talking about online shopping in general.

It can be bloddy annoying where to see the price of an item inc postage you have to go to checkout, sometimes register with the site, confirm your email address, then login, then you find out they want £££ for postage.

It's even worse living in the most northern city in the UK...some sites/couriers seem to think this is offshore  so that means scrolling though t's&c's checking if they're gonna bump the price up even further..
  • The same thing happened when I bought from a user called kaila072.

I told him that there appears to be VAT added which I will not pay as it is against ebays terms and condtions to add surplus amounts to auctions.

They told me it was an ebay error and that I did not have to pay it?

If you ever buy anything from FleaBay where VAT is added you should always ask for a VAT invoice.

But unless the buyer is a VAT registered business, they don't have to provide one.

And if they are not VAT registered, why are they charging VAT in the first place?
