Is this a good deal?
I have said yes and I have 5 days to change my mind.
To continue with BT as my ISP and telephone supplier.
36 month contract
24.99 / month
Unlimited BB usage
Replacement hub and hub phone (in black)
Open-zone wi-fi access
Norton security package

Hp 530 laptop ... this one ... review here (£35 delivery charge for the laptop)

5 votes for bad deal so far... Why?0 -
i personally hate any contracts over 12 months. life changes and you really don't want to be tied down by a 36 month contract.
you will be paying a total of £900 over the contract. the laptop is very basic and will (imo) run Vista slowly.
why not find a cheaper ISP (have a look on https://www.thinkbroadband.com) with a 12 month contract, and buy a better spec'd laptop?0 -
Sounds like a particularly poor deal to me.
If you want a 'free' laptop then checkout the Carphone Warehouse's AOL broadband offer with some perks versus that deal
- still with BT phoneline
- only 24 months commitment
- only £19.99/m (IF you are in an AOL exchange equipment'd area)
- upto 8Mbps (ie ADSMmax) though with 40GB limit/month
- opportunity upgrade 'free' laptop with £50 and £150 better models
- only £15 delivery
- free wireless modem/router
- can add in free 01/02 calls at extra cost
Certainly worth looking at anyway.0 -
I have paid £21.99 for my option 3 BB from BT for the last 10 months so will soon be coming to the end of the 12 month contract which I negotiated down from £27 .I will negotiate another 12 month term in a couple of months which I hope will reflect falling BB prices but if the price does not come down then I will be on my way to a new provider even though Bt have been excellent. If you want to stick with BT negotiate a fiver off the price then ask them for hub and phone to keep your custom.
My DD has just renewed her BB contract and has got a Hub and BT Vision freeview box + free connection and installation.

Thanks for showing me that.
I am not in AOL area so £29.99 not £19.99.
This is how the two compare side by side.
AOL BT
BT phoneline/ BT phoneline
24 months/ 36 months
£29.99/m/ £24.99/m
upto 8Mbps/ upto 8Mbps
40GB limit/month/ unlimited
'free' laptop (Dell)/ free laptop (HP)
laptop upgrade available/ N/A
£15 delivery on laptop/ £35 delivery on laptop
free wireless modem/router/ replacement hub/hubphone (black)
free 01/02 calls £5.00/m/ free 01/02 calls £4.95/m
no connection fee/ no connection fee (existing customer)
/ norton security
/ 250 wi-fi mins/m (not much use to me)
/ 6 months free 4mb online digital storage
In this light not a particularly poor deal.
Still unsure though.
Might try to haggle the delivery cost down - they would not budge on the 36 months when I spoke to them today.0 -
Ah - sorry to hear as I raised that you're not in an the AOL area and hence £240 worse off over 2 years than I would be.
First thing to be sure is WHAT SPEED OF upto 8Mbps ADSL do you expect to receive based either on past experience or else on line speed estimators
eg http://www.dslzoneuk.net/checker.php
For instance it says 2.5Mbps for my line which is the actual throughput I get with synch around 3.0Mbps.
After all if you're only going to get around 2Mbps you could always pay for cheaper 2Mbps service - eg Tiscali £14.99/m for 2Mbps broadband and line rental and weekend calls (tho £30 setup fee equiv to HP delivery fee). Over the 3years that would be saving of £10 x £36 = £360 which sounds more than the HP laptop would cost to me.
Just some extra ideas/confusion to throw into the equation0
