Hello people, If you dont agree what I am going to say please don't jump down my throat....I am only passing on info which may help someone.
I am a professional IT technician and for years I have sung the praises of spybot, but the latest version 1.3 has caused me no end of problems, I built a PC for a mate and he told me it "kept freezing up" not crashing but hanging for a few minutes every so often so I knew it was fine when I handed it to him so I asked him what he had installed on it and the only things he had installed were the 2 things I had recommended which were Avast Anti Virus and Spybot Search and Destroy after a bit of research and doing a google on both apps for problems I was surprised to find that many people are now having problems with the new version Spybot. Now I'm not saying it messes everyones PC up but if you have started having problems after installing Spybot it may be something worth looking into.

Reading this post led me to have a read up on Spybot 1.3. It seems the main problem with this program is with Windows XP or ME.
I'm using this Spybot 1.3 on 3 home computers. On the W98SE computers, I only run the program when I want a scan. On the W2000 Pro computer, I installed the 'tea timer' installation. This runs all the time and pops a message up each time a change to the registry takes place. On all these computers I've never seen a single problem. Is this just 1.3 - The current version is 1.4c
It seems from reading around the problems are all with Spybot 1.3. Version 1.4 is out there, but this is a beta (test or pre release) version. The most up to date full release is still 1.3.How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

I wonder if its Spybot itself or a particular combination of specs on the computer. I have not had problems with spybot but did have with AVg until unstalled and returned to Nortons. Imho its a case of trial and error until you get a system that works for you, maybe a later comp. will not work with the same combination of programs.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

I'm running Spybot 1.3 on Windows XP (SP2) and have had no problems at all.
I'm not using Avast though... could that be the clash? I run Avast on the W2000 computer with Spybot 1.3. Both these programs and the computer in general runs perfectly well together. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

I have installed Spybot and Avast myself on around 50 or so PCs this year and recommended it to many more of but only recently have I found any problems, these problems have not been on every PC but there have been problems with 3 recently...the point I was making was that if your are experiencing problems and you do have Spybot 1.3 installed it may be worth looking into as people seem to think that Spybot is perfect but a quick search on google will reveal I am not the only one experiencing problems with 1.3 and it does have instability issues on some computers.

Must've been asleep when I downloaded my latest copy! Anyway, I did have a problem with SPYBOT 1.4c hanging when I tried to download updates - this is after I installed avast on my laptop. It runs fine on a desktop where I use Norton. I just uninstalled it and then re-installed it. Seems Ok now.HLK

I don't have any problems with 1.3 on XPsp2
On updates, others will know more for Spybot in particular, but I believe that often beta versions of programs do not have update enabled (eg the Firefox 1.0PR I had), although I suppose there it was the program itself, here just a database.0
