DIY party bags...help please

hiya

my friend is having a 4th birthday party next week for her daughter and wants to make party bags for around 20 kids.

|The main criteria are...

1. Cheap
2. Not 'tat' - ie pointless bits of plastic
3. Not full of rubbishy sweets

so you're the experts, any ideas??

Also, we'd like an alternative to the plastic party bags. maybe paper of some kind? Has anyone done this?

thanks guys.

  • As an alternative to sweets I often use packets of raisins or dried fruit. As for gifts you can often get small packs or crayons, pencils or plasticine/playdoh from woolworths or similar shops, and they are more useful than the plastic rubbish that are normally in the bags. Balloons are also another favourite, you can get animal shaped ones than the plain round ones and you can get a big bag for about £2.
Now debtfree except for the mortgage!

My friend did this for her wedding and we found a fab toy stall down our local market who did packs of 4 crayons and little colouring books for very little.

I'm sure if the paper bags were strong enough they would be good enough. Also small packs of rasins would be a good alternative to sweets.

In my local Tesco at the moment is the berry children's toothpaste reduced to 10p. Previously they had dinasour toothbrushes for 18p. If you're lucky there might be some left at your local Tesco. I think they'd make a great party bag addition! HTH

we didn't do party bags but found tesco had pencil sets for 99p so each got a pencil case with ruler etc - the kids loved them and are still using them for school

  • For the girls at the party, what about little posies of flowers? If you could pick them from family gardens that would be free! Another gardening theme that would work for the boys as well would be a packet of seeds like cress for them to take home and grow. You can buy cress seeds very cheaply from places like Wilkinsons.

Just thinking of bag rather than contents, i can remember a friend of mine tying 60cm of plastic ribbon & a balloon on to a choclate bar following a party for her son. Obviously you could choose somethng nicer/healthier etc than a choccie bar but the kids all loved the ribbon & balloon as well and the cost was minimal plus you didnt have to fill up a whole bag.

  • Last year for my son's 5th birthday, instead of party bags we gave the kids books from the book people website. They are normally £10 for a pack of 10 so work out at £1 each. There are normally titles such as The Gruffalo and Peace at Last in their lucky dips. The kids were pleased with them and the parents were even happier.

I bought some Primark drawstring bags at £1 each as partybags, filled them with girly things, lipgloss, some hairthings. Was a great hit.
