Does anyone know of any current bank accounts that will accept someone with a not bad but not so good credit history?

    Hi May:

I can recommend the NatWest Step Account, which I've had for a year now. It's a very basic account (no cheque book, no overdraft), but you can set up standing orders on it, and you do get a Solo debit card, plus interest on your balance (a piffling amount, but never turn your nose up at a penny you haven't had to lift a finger for...).

After a year's well behaved banking (I got into shocking trouble whilst retraining a few years back, which I'm now digging myself out of), NatWest are now talking about upgrading me to a full current account by June, including Switch Card, chequebook, overdraft, and increased interest.

OK, it's basic, but NatWest have really looked after me, and I am happy to recommend. Just over a year after pretty much every other bank rejecting me, I will have a full standard current account once again. Worth the wait, especially considering the boost it gives your credit rating.

    Hope this helps,

    Ratty

Check out this link to banks that provide Basic Bank Accounts which is what I think you are after.
This site has saved me a fortune :money: ...it's also cost me a fortune!

I think a lot will depend on exactly what you mean. A few late payments would be ok to open an account if you did not want an overdraft, but ccj's would mean you would only get a basic account.

I have (to my knowledge) no CCJ's, up to date with mortgage payments but missed about 2 credit card payments recently and one loan payment due to redundancy. So would this affect applying for a current account with overdraft facilities.

It might not affect you applying for a current account but I do not think you will get an overdraft straight away.
Are you now back in employment? Are the bills being paid on time etc?

An interesting thing I noticed about the Nat West Step account the other day is that their Solo card has the Maestro logo on it as well. As Maestro is the new name for Switch, doesn't this mean that it's effectively a Switch card, albeit without the cheque guarantee facility? If that's right then surely it's by far the best of the basic bank accounts, most of which don't offer even an Electron card.

HSBC Solo cards have the maestro logo on the back but the account handbook says its strictly for use abroad only. I doubt a UK retailer which takes maestro but doesn't take solo would accept it. Although we all know how blatently easy it would be to do so. Likewise with VISA & Electron.
