I have to say I'm astounded by this board and the number of people asking for medical advice for their pets rather than taking to the vets for expert treatment.
I quote from the sticky at the top of the page
"this is a board dedicated to pets moneysaving,
the place to discuss the best value pet insurance, any good offers on pet food you spot, where to buy flea treatment and worming tablets, where the best kennels are etc etc
please be aware that asking for or posting specific vet/medical/treatment advice will be against the rules and therefore removed "
Hopefully the moderators will pick this up and start deleting the offending threads as personally I don't think this board is an appropriate way in which to discuss problems and find solutions for their pets!

well arent you just a joy to behold....
yes this board is dedicated to pets moneysaving, and if asking a simple question on here can save you an expensive visit to the vet, then where exactly is the problem? its no different to asking your friends, family and other fellow pet owners you know etc
most threads end up with "go see the vet" anyway,
but a lot are easily resolved with "oh thats nothing, that happened to mine... why dont you try this...."
people dont abide by the rules on ANY section of this forum, why dont you go tell them all? :rolleyes:0 -
Yes, but this board is not discuss issues such as that is it? If this is not enforced, why have the board or put the promises in place to begin with?
My problem is people have/will dispense knowledge which they've picked up which is obviously not correct and some of the time, issues with pets, such as Rabbits for example need to be sorted out quickly or else they could have serious consequences. The idea that someone posts on this forum for veterinary advice and waits for replies is beyond my thinking to be honest when their animals health could be at risk!0 -

But what if it isn't nothing and the pet dies?
It is just the same as giving medical advice about humans, it isn't allowed.
However golly, its best to pm the board guides rather than assume they will see this thread.0 -
It's actually illegal to 'prescribe' for an animal if you're not a vet. But there's nothing to stop people suggesting things which have worked for them......Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0

and the moneysaving in marriages, relationships and families board is not supposed to be about airing all your family problems and deciding wether to leave your OH, but thats basically what it has become... is it really bothering you that much?
as i said, people will ask for help anywhere, friends, family, they wil even consult books, but it doesnt mean any of the advice given is correct,
that cant be helped.
Ive just had a look through this front page and there doesnt seem to be too many instances of life or death with members sat infront of thier PC waiting for a few know it alls to turn up, so i think you may be over reacting a little,Edinburghlass wrote:But what if it isn't nothing and the pet dies?

can i assume then (unless you are a doctor/nurse etc) that you have never given any kind of medical advice to anyone? because its really no different...
"ohhh, i had those little spots once, i dipped my head in dettol and stuffed cauliflower up my nose... cleared up in no time"
and to be honest, if someone is sat at the computer with a clearly sick animal crawling with maggots or howling in pain waiting for people to turn up and do nothing but send virtual ((hugs))
then with thier lack of brain power they dont deserve to be pet owners in the first place.0 -
Well, I think we'll agree to disagree as I've counted several active discussions asking about health advice and yes it does bother me, there's currently a discussion about a guinea pig which had maggots and the owner was going to ask advice in the Pet shop! It does bother me and as animals can't speak then the owner should be pro active and seek the appropriate expert advice rather than cutting corners to save a few quid.
This strikes me again as people buying pets and not thinking long term on how much it costs. I would suggest you spend a day in a vets watching people come in with their animals who left it, dogs with lumps the size of footballs and Rabbits full of maggots then you might understand my side of things when I see incorrect advice and people just 'leaving it' to see if it will improve.
I'll send a pm to the moderator to either remove the sticky as it ain't being enforced or get them to remove the offending threads.0 -
9 times out of 10, the op is taking the animal to the vets already and has an appointment booked.
Some people like to know how they can make their pet more comfortable in the meantime, or what it could be and to prepare themselves for how much it is going to cost.
I think you need to get back in bed and get out on the right side of it:xmastree: :snow_laug Christmas Nutter :snow_laug:xmastree:0 -
Surely it's just like asking a neighbour or a friend for advice?Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless. ~ Mother Teresa0

fair enough,
but as i said.... there is NO helping people who cant figure out that an animal riddled with maggots needs a vet not a pet shop, they really shouldnt be allowed to have pets in the first place,
but as there is no common sense exam that needs to be passed before your allowed to have an animal (or a child, sadly) the best we can do is tell these people to stop mucking about at home and get an appointment!
i still stand by my original comments though that the majority of people on here are not posting while thier animal lays dying, they are just after a little advice of what to do next, whats going to happen, is there a pit fall i havent thought of or how can i avoid this in future?0 -
I echo curious_george. And to expect MSE board members to search through all the posts on here which others find uncomfortable would be expecting too much - that is of course if we want these forums to remain free of charge.
I think the majority of folk on here that aren't looking for finance help are looking for advice and support and it they can have a laugh and a giggle along the way then so be it.
