I can wholeheartedly recommend an organic veg bag or box to all of those here who are considering starting to buy one. I worked out that you are talking about £2 difference on about 10 quids worth of veg in value compared to non- organic from the supermarket. So if you can afford an extra £2 a week it is well worth for quality and taste. Plus, it makes it more varied in the veg you get to eat as it is things you normally won't buy.

Hi Phil, What did you get in your box if you dont mind me asking? I try to shop at our local market, they are very good & some weeks we get a bit of a discount.0

I noticed Tesco were selling a £10 organic veg box ... it didn't actually look brilliant tbh, and certainly didn't look like £10 worth of veg (even organic veg lol) ... I think there was a lettuce, some mushrooms, plums, tomatoes, a couple of potatoes and a couple of other bits. I'm wondering if this is fairly typical, as I'm thinking of starting a box order once I move house and this seemed a bit overpriced?0

i get my weekly box from a local organic greengrocer, its £16 with free delivery and this week i got....
a large cauli
3 onions
large brocolli
1 huge red pepper
1 cabbage
about 7 baking size potatos
4 apples
4 pears
3 banannas
1 lemon
i am really impressed with quality and everything seems to keep well so must be fresh as well- prior planning prevents poor performance!

This is a good example of what I get each week. There is plenty for us (2 hungry adults and a fruit mad, non stop eating 3 year old.)
STANDARD VEGETABLE BAG (suitable 2-4 people) @ £10.55
New Potatoes
Carrots
Onions
Cherry Tomatoes
Chard
Cucumber
Courgettes
Squash
Aubergine
STANDARD FRUIT BAG (suitable 2-4 people) @ £7.50
Royal Gala Apples
Bananas
Packham Pears
Peaches
Galia Melon
Santa Rosa Plums
We get organic eggs from them each week too at £1.25 for 6.
They're from farmaround north.
It's all very fresh and keeps well and you can state what you don't want in your bags. (I've given up on lettuce and papaya!)May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0 -
I bought the tesco one to-day - very good quality veg - 10 items for £10 and the beetroot is wonderful - I made mushroom soup already and boiled the beetroot and will have salad with the lettuce and tomatoes and the beetroot with our dinner tonight with some of their potatoes. I would buy it again - also had nectarines and plums in.
Edited to add - 1kg potatoes, 5 beetroot, 4 nectarines, 6 plums, 1 cabbage, bunch of spring onions, 1 lettuce, 2 red peppers, 1 tub mushrooms, 1 packet mini tomatoesSaving in my terramundi pot £2, £1 and 50p just for me! :j0 -

Is there any way to find how many potatoes and onion etc. you actually get?0 -
This is a fairly typical week. The apples were enormous that week so we only got 2. Everything on the table except the bread was from them.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0 -

Gingham's list is a really good guideline. As far as I can tell, all the suppliers provide a basic core each week of Potatoes, carrots and onions. That would be my one objection to the value that 7/8 spuds in a family of 4 box is no where near enough for a week- 2 or 3 days is more realistic. But it is worth remembering that pots prices are high at the moment with flooding, therefore, that could explain the lack of value in the pots.:beer:0 -

I think organic food at the supermarket is very poor value as it has a nice supermarket margin added on the price. I would suggest the best way to judge value is to find a supplier in your area and make a one off order and see what you think and if it is worth it.:beer:0 -
