Shuttle service from Toronto Airport - Downtown?

Please can anyone advice best & cheapest way to get to & from Toronto Airport (flying with Zoom) but they have not stated name of airport to downtown. We are just two of us travelling. I have never been to Toronto before. We are planning to stay 2 nights and then travel to Niagara and stay 1 night. Is it better to hire a car?

There is a shuttle bus which does the rounds of the main hotels and it's not too expensive. This is the first google hit for "Toronto airport shuttle" http://www.torontoairportexpress.com/

The cheapest way to get to and from Pearson airport is the local public transportation (TTC). It takes a little longer than the Airport Express but is heaps cheaper. It is a regular city bus so not great if you have lots of luggage.

Car rentals from the airport are also a good deal if you are planning to go to Niagara Falls as well. Several companies run tourist buses every morning from downtown Toronto to the Falls but it nice to have a car to drive to Niagara-on-the-Lake, a very pretty 20min drive from the Falls along the river to a lovely town. Winery tours are also a must in that area, I went to Inniskillan and it was v.nice.

Thank you all for replying and giving me useful links. Is it difficult to drive over there? I have never driven abroad - left hand drive cars & are directions easy to follow? I have driven here in UK for 20 yrs with alot of confidence.

Good afternoon: As my name suggests I'm Canadian (and a native Torontonian :D ) The shuttle from Pearson doesn't stop at all of the hotels...public transport is cheap, clean and reliable. We always rent a car when we visit...book online through Quidco before you leave the UK and go for an all inclusive deal (We used Hertz at Christmas this year...picked it up at the airport) Driving is straight forward...more room over there...you can make a right turn on a red light...no roundabouts...stick to the speed limits as police will enforce... impaired driving is a huge no-no...for more info on driving in Ontario visit http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/driver/handbook/contents.htm

    HTH (and enjoy Canada!)

Be aware that driving in and around Toronto is pretty daunting-depends on how often you drive on 5 lanes over here;)

My two cents- when we went we taxi'd to the hotel in Toronto (thoroughly recommend the Grand Hotel and Suites-fantastic service, probably the best hotel I've ever stayed in for service, price, amenities etc.)then we used the Amtrak train to get to Niagara Falls and back.
Then we went to the airport to pick up the car to head out to lakes country- I also bought the Canadian equivalent of the highway code during the first week and read it from cover to cover.

fwiw you can pick up cars in Niagara, they didn't have the car we required so we travelled back up to TO.:D

When we went we got the train to Niagra falls, we found downtown Toronto very compact and easy to get around, if i was you i would not bother with car hire.

A belated thank you also to Canucklehead,ailuro2 and paul2468 for your posts. Only two weeks to go & excited but have still not booked accommodation:confused: think I will go for Sheraton Centre today through Canadian Affair but they charge booking fee of £25 if flights not booked through them - best rate so far around £90pp - can anyone get better? Also please can anyone recommend cheap clean place to stay in Niagara for one night?

http://www.spg.com Register here and check out the prices - this is the hotel chain's website. I've had a quick look, and prepaid rates for a king size bed are canadian $318 for prepaid rates - around £150 for the room, and about £155 if you choose to pay on check out instead. I used Starwood hotels quite a lot, and not stayed in a bad one yet. I'm going to Canada in September and using Starwood hotels throughout except for one place! I can't comment as I haven't been yet, but we've booked into Four Points by Sheraton Toronto Lakeshore. Still pretty close to the centre of town, but nearly half the price and still looks very nice!

You also have a possibility of getting upgraded as an SPG - happened to me a couple of times.

Oh yes, no booking fees to pay either!

Got back from Toronto 2 weeks ago so here my info .... dont get the shuttle bus as it costs $16 per person. Get the 192 bus from the airport to Kipling subway, and then get the metro to Downtown. total cost is $2.75 per person. journey is approx an hour depending on where you want to go in downtown.

In terms of driving, I hired a car there. Never driven abroad before and I found it OK. First day was a bit awkward but after that its quite easy. Just take it easy as Canadians are patient people and wont hassle you for driving too slow or anything. Dont speed too much cos the locals dont!! Also, remember that you are allowed to turn right on a red light provided the exit is compelely clear.
