TV licensing - why don't they check their records?

I received a letter from TV licensing this morning saying;
Dear Mr xxxxxx,
We have recently been advised that you bought television receiving equipment in April 2007 from Electronic Zone. However, we have no record of a TV Licence in your name for the above address.
However, there is an up to date licence in my partners name for our address.
Why does the letter say 'in your name' when it's the location that's covered?
Plus the fact that retailers are obviously bullied into providing lists of who has purchased a TV.
The bit about the TV is also incorrect - I did buy a portable TV but it was last year sometime - August I think, not April 2007.
This reallly feels like 'big brother' - I find it quite disturbing. The onus is now on me to contact them and explain myself.
Why don't they simply check their records before wasting my (& their) time?

Just ignore it. Let them waste their time chasing you for the license. You have one so when they come to the door show it to them.
Or like me, you could get so fed up with them harassing you and having to ring them, that you could email them (AGAIN!!) give them the number on your license, threaten to sue them for harassment if they don't stop sending you letters and invite them around for tea ANY time, to view your license. Copy this letter via royal mail to the highest up person you can find and bingo!
Strangely enough, they stopped writing to us after that. :rotfl:Good Enough Club member number 27(2) AND I got me a stalkee!

They dont know if you are married to this person or partner or renting a room or flat at the same property. Place you bought TV from was lazy in sending the details., by sounds of it.
As said, ignore it, let them wate there time. Onus is on themMansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j0 -
"...Plus the fact that retailers are obviously bullied into providing lists of who has purchased a TV."
It's a legal requirement for all retailers to provide this information to the licensing authorities."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0 -
In answer to the OPs original question, it is because they are complete morons.
End of story.0 -
The only 'records' TVL have are a list of names and addresses (not very accurately maintained), and a list of TV licence owners. If you are in the first list and not the second, you get hassled.0

Don't worry about it...I live in student halls, and so far this year have got 5 letters from them, each getting slightly worse, saying final warning, they're gonna take me to court etc...but if I don't own a TV or have already got a license, then just ignore the letters. You can write to them to explain it, but why bother spending a stamp?
They rarely come round to check anyway. One thing...that sets pulses racing...that gets hearts pounding...for which there is no substitute...only YOU can provide...blood.
Only 5% of the eligible population give blood: do something amazing today, save a life, give blood0 -
They are just awful. When we moved and left previous house empty for 6 months we must have had a letter every month if not more often even though I told them it was empty when we moved to our new house. What a waste of everyone's time.0

That means someone has given your details when they bought the TV in order to defraud. It's happened to me a few times but with a different name but my address.0 -
I've witnessed a classic case of someone getting caught without a licence.
The neighbour had curtains open and was visably watching t.v. I noticed a guy, who seemed outta sync with the student area, ringing the doorbell as i was getting into my car. He said "hi, i'm from the t.v. liencing board"
Poor sod!

The TV Licensing quango are run by Capita (the company that ballses up and still wins government contracts).
I make a point of providing an absurdly false name and address whenever I buy TV related equipment.
Last year instead of renewing our licence in my name, my wife applied for a new one in her name as I was working away from home. Then the farce started. The letters started rolling in from TV Licensing in bold red print. It's so obvious that even the postie started joking about the letters. Threats, visits etc but they still can't tie their database up. What irked me was that I was expected to phone a 0870 number to inform them. The man without a signature.0
