breathing question

Options
Hi all - first, im not asking for medical advice, just an opinion

Last week, i went to the doc as i had an awful cough and had a bit of problem with breathing as i could hear breath twice in the one breath, and yellow flem (chest infection).

He gave me antibiotics (amoxicilian) for 5 days. 5 days later, still got the same problem minus flem, so he gives me another 5 days worth (thursday).

This morning, i woke up, with horrible coughing but then i couldnt breathe. \couldnt get any air in atall for about 30/40 seconds (tho it felt like an hour), and then, i was getting a tiny amount in and within about 3 / 4 mins, everything was back to normal. Went back to sleep and same thing happened when i woke up again. Bout half hour ago, felt similer simptoms when i coughed but took some water and it stopped and breathing went back to normal.

What i want to know, is what it could be that is causing those breathing problems. I have had asthma when i was a child, but never have experianced not being able to breathe like that even during an atack. I dont have any alergys to penicilians, just ethromision and i didnt eat anything that i hadnt ate in the past, within past 24 hours so i have rulled out alergic reaction.

only medication im on atm is mirtazapine and amoxicilian.

any ideas?

I dont like to call out docs as there are people worse off than me who need attention before me and i feel fine at the moment

Ring NHS Direct, or your own surgerys's out of hours number. This is not trivial - not being able to breathe is not a good thing. It may be a reaction to the anti-biotics - have you read the leaflet that came with them?

i would call too, if you had asthma in the past it could be that again and needs to be seen to, explain to them that you had asthma before
  • Definitely call NHS direct (they'll go through all the symptoms with you and based on your answers will advise you what to do)

I once had an 'innocent' cough and didn't feel too bad either but then started having a bit of trouble breathing - next thing I was in hospital having been found unconscious - with collapsed lung and pneumonia. Don't ignore it!! It all happened very fast. You need to check it out.

Hopefully, it's nothing as dramatic and you'll be fine - but it should be checked.

I would definitely see the GP - you shouldn't let breathing problems go univestigated. good luck!

    Hi all

Did call up NHS direct, and ive to go in to hospital today at 6pm to get checked over. They said it could be an alergic reaction, asthma, virual infection, or a combination of them.

Happened twice today, hope it dont happen again

  • the exact same thing happened to me, and i AM allergic to penicillin,
so despite you saying your not... you may well be.

I was given amoxycillin (or something similar) for a chest infection and that night i woke up unable to breathe out for a very long 30 seconds,
I thought i was going to die

went back to the doctors first thing and found they had given me penicillin despite there being big warning signs on my record that i cant have it.

Could it have been a panic attack? Some lung conditions mean that you have difficulty getting air out, which you need to do to be able to get air in. How old are you and are you a smoker?
