Smelly Lunchbox

Hi folks need help please

Came across a lunchbox in the fridge at work, totally forgot about it, can't really describe what it was like I feel sick even thinking about it, must have been left over dinner or something

Can't seem to get the smell out, all suggestions very welcome.

Thanks

perhaps you could try putting some bicarb in it, as that usually absorbs odours, and leave it for 24 hours

or it might work if you put the lunch box in the freezer for 24 hours, cos i'm sure thats what you do when you have a tub that smells of curry or something else thats strong smelling,to get rid of it ;)

  • Hi

I need help. I have a plastic lunchbox which I have had for about 6 months, I have only ever used it to put ham/tuna salads in and sandwiches with ordinary fillings in like beef, ham, cheese etc. Last week, I made a tuna salad and took it to work with me but since then my lunchbox has had a distinctly vulgar smell to it. It kind of smells like rotting food / rotting plastic. I have tried washing it several times with fairy liquid to get rid of the stench and have even left it to soak in warm water and squeezed lemon juice for 24hrs. I thought this would have worked or at least helped a little but it doesnt seem to have done anything. I have brought a ham salad into work today and am eating it at the mo and can smell the stinky thing from about about a foot away!!

My dad has suggested using bicarb of soda to get rid of it. Would this work and if so how do you use it? Sorry im clueless on these things but just want to get rid of the smell!!

Would the tuna salad I had last week have absorbed itself into the plastic? Just a thought but every suggestion is welcome!!

    Thanks for your help.
  • With my thermos flask I put in a shake of bicarb (a teaspoon full?) then top up with water and leave overnight. It works like magic.

    Good luck!

I'd do that too. Or make a paste with bicarb and water and wipe it all over and leave it to dry.
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.
  • For smelly bottles or flasks my Mum has always used sterilising tablets (the sort you buy for babies bottles). You can get them from any pharmacy. I've got some from Boots.

Stick the right amount (you'll need to adjust the amount of tablet to the amount of water as they are usually 1 tablet to 2/3 litres water) add boiling water and leave overnnight. Give it a rinse and voila!

    Hi lacoste,

There are more ideas on this older thread that should help.

    Smelly Lunchbox

I'll merge your thread with that one later to keep all the suggestions together.

I use milton aswell, I just get the liquid rather than the tablets, but you use cold water not hot. Make sure there isn't any food stuck anywhere either. Pink honey that link wouldn't work for me.
One day I might be more organised...........
