Is there a section anywhere for vegan recipes - I did try searching but didnt find anything.
I want to invite some new friends over to dinner and the husband is vegan and I am panicking a bit, especially about a pud (apart from fresh fruit).
Any ideas?

a couple of sites for you

a lot of recipes have aduki beans in which are lovely and can be bought canned from Sainsburys and frozen from there too - haven't seen them elsewhere but they're getting easier to buy in a ready to use form. Or of course you can soak your own - but don't do too many like my husband did...
it's less scary than you think but just don't add butter or a splash of cream at the last minute0 -
Hi lolly,
Some of the suggestions on these older threads might help:

It's also worth having a look at google for vegan dessert recipes

Thanks Justie
I liked the look of the vegan chef recipes. I hadn't realised that bought pasta is vegan - I make my own and use eggs. But there are quite a few good ideas and I will probably go with the moroccan veg stew with couscous. I haven't decided on pud yet0 -
Thanks Pink - we posted at the same time, I will check out your threads as well.0

Lolly Co-op and tescos mark their vegan stuff as vegan... be careful of buying something just because it doesn't seem to have eggs or milk, there are several 'hidden' non vegan ingredients in food.
Good luck with it.The stupid things you do, you regret... if you have any sense, and if you don't regret them, maybe you're stupid. - Katharine Hepburn0 -
You can pick up vegan margerine in any healthfood shop which means you can make cakes, crumbles etc for dessert. Or I have seen cakes etc made with veg oil in recipes too. Good luck!0

The moroccan veg stew looks lovely doesn't it think I may have to make it myself this week.0 -
No Justie, sainsburys and tesco both do vegan white pasta as do lots of health stores. The stupid things you do, you regret... if you have any sense, and if you don't regret them, maybe you're stupid. - Katharine Hepburn0

fear not my unenlightened friend, there is always a friendly vegan here for advice!
supermarkets do do white and brown vegan (dried) pasta, usually cheaper than egg pasta. Always check the back and if the only ingredient is 100% durum wheat semolina or something like that then it's vegan. it'd be easy enough to whip up a bolognese with a tin of kidney beans and maybe some soya mince (realeat soya mince available in a green bag in most supermarkets and health food shops).
a vegetable soup for starter would be very simple as well. just check the ingredients on the stock cubes for any hidden milk derived additives such as lactose, whey, casein etc. You might like to take a look here for info on what to avoid: http://www.vegansociety.com/html/food/criteria.php
for pud, you might want to try a simple fruit crumble with vegan custard. Pure margarine (available in supermarkets at aroun 80p-£1 for a 500g tub) is a suitable substitute for butter. British sugar is fine as it isn't bone char refined, and flour is okay. The custard (alpro or sainsbury do good ones) is about £1 for a 500ml carton, or you could make your own using bird's custard powder and soya milk.
If you want wine for your meal or after, go to co-op because they label their suitable wines vegan.

Justie wrote:the green pasta is and the red but I think any white pasta is egg isn't it? My vegan friend would only eat the green pasta.
Most dried pasta is vegan - white included. The ones with egg tend to say "al uovo" (however you spell it!) or say egg pasta on them. Fresh pasta from a shop has egg in. I have seen black pasta on sale, but this isn't vegan as it has squid ink in it!
There seem to be quite a few of us on these boards who are vegan.0
