Very confused about wireless

Options
I just had Virgin media broadband installed today.
However, the modem had be installed into a different room than where the desktop is placed.
I am getting very confused about wireless routers and was wondering if someone could tell me what I needed to purchase to send the signal from the room with the modem to the room with the pc.
Thank you.

Assuming the modem is wireless then you will need a wireless adapter on the pc to conmect. They should have left you details on how to connect to the modem with a wireless adapter - infact they should have set it up for you!

  • You'll need a wireless adapter in your PC to communicate with your router.
Can either be USB or PCI. Go to https://www.maplin.co.uk to see types on offer and make sure it's compatible with your router.

If Virgin Media only supplied a modem (not a wireless router) then you'll need one of these in addition to the wireless adapter in the PC

Sorry but it's not a wireless modem and the engineer just installs the modem, he doesn't actually set it up for the customer.

They only supplied a modem and I don't think it is wireless.
So basically, I need to connect my modem to a wireless router and have a wireless adapter on my pc in the other room to connect it.
I bought a Wireless G kit from Dixons earlier today but it requires the router to be connected to the pc tower and the modem which is impossible!
I have no idea what I need!

It can be a bit chicken and egg

Normally the router will be connected to the modem, and then allow the PC to connect to the router via the wireless connection

    BUT

1st the router need to be configured to allow this to happen, so you need to connect the router to the ( a ) PC ( could be a laptop, borrow one?) via a cat 5 cable plugged into one of the ports on the router, and the other end into a network port on the PC ( your PC may well not have one of these - but only cost £5-£10), or use a loptop since they generally have one built in

Then you can connect to the internal web page of the router from web browser on connect PC ( http://192.168.1.1 or similar usually) and set up the wireless connection thru there

Or maybe they have since come up with another way which doesn't require the above procedure, but thats what I've always done

Not too sure why they didn't install where you needed it. Anyway, assuming you have a cable modem from Virgin then you need to attach the Dixons wireless router to this using the same network cable that would have come with the modem. If you have managed to install the wireless adapter in you PC, switch off both modem & router. Now switch on the modem - let the lights settle down, then turn on the router. Your PC should now be able to 'see' the router and you should get the option to connect to it. Does it get this far?

Thank you for your suggestion bob_a_builder but I just cannot seem to understand what you are telling me to do!
I will probably ask a more techie relative who will understand your instructions!
If anyone knows a different way, please help.

Tallymanjohn- The installation man insisted that the best option was to have the modem put in this room because the other room is at the back of the house and too much drilling and wiring was involved. Having just moved house, the idea of someone who seemed slightly unsure about what he was doing, let loose with a drill was too unnerving!

I have tried to connect the modem and router only with the modem cable but it still is not working.

Hmmm! I think the installation guy was just making the job easier for himself. What sort of modem is it you have? description or a make/model? Same for the router - make/model?
