Distasteful Toilet Challenge- is it just me??

Options
I can't believe I'm posting this but here goes!!

Cleaning the toilet.
I am a Flylady so swish and swipe the loo everyday and give it as I thought a real good clean at least twice per week using well known heavy chemicals which tell you to spray it around the rim, leave a certain length of time and then brush round to clear away limescale and almost all household germs!!

Yesterday & don't ask me why. I mean why would anyone do this? I got my little compact mirror and had a look under said rim after I had just applied the chemicals. I thought I had applied it well, completely covering the rim and quite a quantity too. What I saw astonished me, dirty dirt that wasn't even touched by the chemicals or the subsequent vigorous brushing YUK!!! So today I thought I'd get it clean so I have been on my knees with a long rubber glove and a well known brand of wire pink soaped pad scrubbing away with my little mirror as my companion and I still can't get it all off, my arm is hurting and I think it's going to take 3 or 4 goes. Next time I'm going to get the heavy chemicals out again and apply it with a cloth or sponge - no more spraying for me.

MY CHALLENGE TO YOU IS......HAVE A LOOK UNDER YOUR RIM (or is it only me)AND REPORT BACK WHAT YOU FIND. Happy days.

Yep, Ignorance is bliss, mind you, I expect I'll have to look now :D
  • I'm going to go out on a limb here, and please don't shoot me down for suggesting it, but if you need to get on your hands and knees with a compact mirror to see the limescale under the rim, then why don't you ignore it? Pretend it isn't there and no-one else will ever know ;). If you regularly squirt cleaner round the rim and have a good go with the brush, it really will be clean enough. Limescale just discolours unfortunately, but it's not going to kill you! I have a bleach-free household here, and my home is really very clean and hygenic. No-one is ever ill from using my lavatory - I keep my bathroom clean using ecover loo cleaner, soda crystals, vinegar and a bit of elbow grease, and make sure that anything which is touched (flush, door handle etc.) is cleaned regularly to prevent the spread of germs, but I would honestly rather have a bit of limescale lurking under the loo rim than chuck chemical after chemical down the drain.

Maybe a bottle of cheap white vinegar in the water tank so when you flush it the acid can dissolve the limescale? It has to be said that there are plenty of parts in your loo which you won't be able to see and which are scaled up. I really wouldn't worry.

I could make it better myself at home. All I need is a small aubergine...

And goodness, it's turned out to be better and busier!
  • Yes, what harm does limescale do apart from looking yucky? ( I know about the harm it does to WMs and DWs). Is it a germ trap or just a covering of lime?
  • Well, yes, its rough texture does make limescale attract grime and therefore germs, but the germs can be kept under control by regular cleaning. The grubby limescale is just a bit unsightly, but no-one can see it there. It always makes me laugh when I see adverts for these chemicals which promise to kill all the germs under your loo rim: yes, they're such a menace, those loo rim germs, such a hazard when you're licking the toilet. :rotfl: :rotfl:

What makes me laugh are the ads that say your baby's high chair tray has more germs than your toilet. The moral of that surely is, feed your child in the toilet rather than the high chair....
