Warm Front people have p*ssed me off!!!

I'm looking for some advice re Warm Front/EAGA grants.

I moved into my house in September 2005, the boiler was a back boiler but had broke down sometime ago.

An immersion style heater had been fitted to the hot water tank, as a replacement to the boiler, which incidently costs my a fortune in electricity bills! As do the storage heaters you use to heat the bedrooms!

I had read about the Warm Front grant on the Powergen website, and applied for one soon after moving in.

After a successful appliacation around three or four months after a man from EAGA came round to assess what we needed.

It was decided we qualified for the grant of 2700.00. We now had to wait for a man from the installation co. to come round.

This happened three weeks ago (a good 16 months after the initial installation).

The man from Iguana said that we could have five radiators and a new boiler.
He said that they would have to come through the roof, which would cost more but the grant would more than cover the cost of all of the work.

The downside would be that we had to rip up our newly laid bathroom floor and half of my sons floor too.

This hadn't bothered me, afterall we were getting free heating!

However...

Yesterday, I received a letter from EAGA, saying that the cost of the work and the materials would be around 3200.00, meaning for the work to go ahead I would need to make a contribution of 530.00.

Struggling to make ends meet as it is, this would be impossible, i guess that ill have to stick with my disastrous immersion heater and my ridiculous electric heaters, and continue paying 400.00 a quarter in electricity bills.

Do you think there is anything that I could do to get the cost of the work reduced or the grant increased? My son and my partner are constantly getting colds and im sure its because of the lack of proper heating.

Any help or advice would be hugely apprecaited.

Thanks in advance

Well, I can answer one thing: you can't get the grant increased from £2,700 UNLESS it's for an oil-fired boiler - if it's gas then it's £2,700 and that's it.

You say you could have 5 new radiators and a new boiler and 'it would have to come through the roof' which would mean a lot of making-good, building repairs as well as just the boiler and radiators which would be a straightforward job for a heating engineer.

Look at it this way: you say you're paying a fortune for heating water by electricity and for storage heaters, £400 in quarterly electricity, that's £133.33 a month? Astronomic!!! You're being offered a complete new up-to-date system and all you're being asked for is a £530 contribution? You'd save that in a matter of weeks, on the electricity you wouldn't be using!!

We recently had a new condensing combi boiler installed under this scheme, we didn't pay a penny extra to the £2,700. These new efficient boilers are reckoned to save 1/3rd in gas bills over the old ones. Have another think about it!
