which type of hoover?

Can anyone give me suggestions for a hoover - old one is 20 years old and had brilliant suction power.
So I'm basically trying to replace a good hoover, that isn't too heavy, and has good suction abilty.
But there are so many on the market that I would prefer reccommendations from those that use them, than from a sales assistant.

Have you got pets?
The Miele Cat and Dog is brilliant. It copes with hair from collies, my long hair and the mess that 2 young boys make without and problems. It's light and easy to move around, and I'm really pleased with it.Here I go again on my own....0 -
Agree with everything Becles says except I wouldn't call it light. But then I wouldn't call it heavy either - it's what you expect from a full size hoover. Prior to the Miele we had Dysons that looked cool but were unreliable. I always thought uprights were more convenient, then I realised that I was spending a lot of time using the attachments rather than just pushing it round - no more effort to use a cylinder like the Miele.0

May i suggest dyson
We use dyson and have done for years always very reliable, however the one we have at the mo just released by dyson is great never looses suction no need for a bag just empty once full.
The price however not worth it was rather expensive but dydson have a big range available
Good luck in your search

Another vote for Dyson (upright)0

Miele cat and dog here as well. I find that although its no lightweight (there are much lighter vaccums around) it feels lighter when going up and down the stairs cos you can hold it closer to your body without taking your ankles off0

I've found the Henry to be unbeatable and its good on cat hair also, in fact it cleans the local cat sanctuary and its still going strong after 6 years. They also use it in the community hospital I work in, have had mine for 18months and no probs unlike the Dyson I have had in the past.0

Interesting post. I also need to replace a hoover.
Any recommendations as to cost? Places to buy from?
Thanks

Another vote for the dyson (DC07 we have). Not only is it a blooming good cleaner but you get 3year guarantee and have never had any hassles getting replacement parts (must have gone though 5 stair tools by now!). Excellent customer services.0

Dysons are heavy if you have to carry up and down stairs. I am on my second Electrolux upright with a back saver handle. This one is baggless and brill. My first Electrolux lasted me 9 years and is still going strong - pretty good by todays standards - and cost me £30 in Index sale. I couldn't resist the bagless one in a closing down sale a few months ago for £34. This is fabby too :j
