Do you need a card to shop at Costco?
If so, how do you get one?
    thanks.
  • you need a card to make a purchase - you have to fill out an instore form and it costs around £20 IIRR. if u just want to have a look - they can give a free visitors pass.

Well worth the annual fee. We've been going for years and saved hundreds of pounds on stuff we've bought.

All top branded stuff at the very best prices. Even their own make (Kirkland) is very good quality.

Only thing to beware of are the Cigs and Booze. They're not the cheapest around.

The passport comes round every year (it's a discount booklet) and has many very good savings on.

I'm not sure if membership restrictions are still in place. When i joined you had to work in a certain profession (Accountant, Solicitor etc) or work in certain industries - (Insurance, Gov't employees etc). Not sure if these still apply.
  • I picked up a form a few day ago for a friend. The form still asked about profesional status.

Im no longer a member, found it not much better than some deals the supermarkets had on at certain time of the year.I just bought bulk when they do ( ie 50% extra free on finish dishwasher tablets in tesco last month)When you break it down to price per tablet, worked out cheaper than costco

Also tended to buy things because they were cheap, not because we needed them.the vax is a good price, but do you need one? Then you have to look at where you nearest one is, for me it costs £7 return for each trip, and then theres the time it takes.(specially if the dartford tunnels got a big queue)

The only thing i did find cheap were the Michelin tyres, but thats not somthing the average user needs too often

Just got to weigh it up, it was £24 for 1 card, plus another £12 i think for an additinal card.

For me its £100 per year plus the agro of getting there.

Fair do's, it's not going to suit everyone and i sympathise with you not having one close by.

One thing we save a small fortune on is buying the fresh meat in bulk. Split it up and freeze it, quite often works out to a 50% saving on supermarket meat and the quality is the best we've ever had.

But as you say, you've got to wiegh the pro's and cons (and not get sucked into buying just cos it's cheap !).

Hi there, I have been a member of costco for a number of years and have found that although you have to pay a membership fee every year, the savings that you make far outweigh the initial outlay. I recently took up the passport offer for the Michelin tyres which was buy 4 and get 20% off. The tyres cost me £139. You have the option of taking them away and then returning at a later date to get them fitted if your car does not need them yet. I had asked at kwik fit and other places and the best price I had got was £65 per tyre so a massive saving.

Some of the electrical equipment is much cheaper than in high street stores but is generally more expensive than online retailers. However, unlike most places, the guarantee is exceptional. If you are not happy with a product you can take it back for a full refund of the purchase price (no questions asked) and if you are not happy with the service they will give you the cost of the membership back. You can get a full refund either at day one or even after 2-3years which some of my friends have done for uneven wearing shoes!!! They have however clamped down on this recently for computers because people were buying the latest computers and then returning them in 1-2 years for a full refund and then promptly going back to get a newer version

I am a trade member of the same Costco that amancalledchip refers to. I’ve been a member from the first day Costco, Lakeside opened.

Store location is important – No point in investing time and money traveling to purchase a low value item for a couple of quid saving.

Shopping intelligently is key – Don’t let your heart rule your head. If you don’t need it, don’t buy it. Having said that a number of products are sold on a WIGIG
[when it’s gone it’s gone] basis so if you were considering purchasing such a product but sometime in the future, buy it as it may not be available when you next visit.

Supermarkets/Stores do price match and can better Costco prices on some products some of the time. However in general the majority of products sold by Costco are cheaper. As ever, “Buyer Beware” applies. If purchasing a number of products from Costco and racking up a considerable saving, is it really worth the drive to a supermarket to save 40p on a tray of baked beans for example?

I agree that Kirkland branded products in general are well made and great value for money.

The Costco money off voucher "Passport" is now called the Costco "Wholesale Wallet 2005". Product vouchers are date coded and can only be used during the
7 day period indicated on them. Different product vouchers are available each week with the final product vouchers available between 4th/10th April 05. Each voucher entitles you to purchase multiples of that product. The multiple varies from product to product and is printed on each voucher. The Passport/Wholesale Wallet vouchers were issued annually [in my area usually in October] but it now appears that these discount vouchers will be issued bi-annually. If you don’t have this book of vouchers, don’t worry, as amancalledchip has posted above, individual product vouchers have been placed near to displays and/or at the checkouts.

Another point to consider is Costco’s refund policy. Here Costco excel. I have always received a full refund without argument even when the product is over
12 months old. Currently I have one product to be returned which is 16 months old and Costco have agreed a full refund.

Word To The Wise: When returning a product, don’t lie about it’s purchase date. I.E. "I’ve lost my receipt but only purchased the product 3 months ago."
Costco computers record every purchase you have ever made and this info can be obtained by their staff in seconds, usually from a terminal on the returns counter. Recently I asked if I could return a product that had developed a fault and informed Costco that I thought it was purchased 2/3 years ago. "Not a problem", said Costco.
I returned the product, it’s purchase date was checked, 1999, Eeeek!
Costco still gave me a full cash refund. Now that’s what I call service!

Over the years I have saved several thousand pounds on a wide range of products purchased from Costco so have no problem with paying a membership fee.

I should add that my only connection with Costco is as a satisfied customer.
;)Do It To Them Before They Do It To You ;)

To us costco is a day out as it take 45 mins to get there and normally dont do a regular shop there as it would be too expensive but when there we normally get potato scones a huge big pack which goes in the freezer and used as needed, also hubby gets beer - stella they have the kegs at a really good price hubby bought 2 plus a case  , croissants are a must in this house and the irn bru was 8 2liters for about £5, soap powder/tablets i do get from there (bold 2 in 1 lavender less than £2 for 24 tbs), that sometimes prompts us to go anything else we pick up is a bonus to us ie i got a nice pink jacket there yesterday £19 i countnt have got it elsewhere for that and yes the electricals do tend to be better than high street i got the vax saved £62 and was looking at them not expecting or knowing costco had an offer, also past purchases was the deep fat fryer the rotary one £40 ish and in shops without the digital timer about £60-80 all chance purchases.

Although hubby says each year he isnt renewing the card cause it costs him too much money but each year we manage to have found something that has saved us the cost of the memberhips and we do renew each year;)

I last visited Costco about 18 months ago. Since then I have found that I am buying only organic/free range or fair trade items and Costco's supply of such items was nil. Is it still the same? (I used to particularly like the salmon, fresh and inexpensive, but after finding out about farming methods, frankly I could not put it in my mouth!).
