Watch out for Lovefilm.com!

Options
I followed the links in November and signed up for the free Lovefilm.com DVD trial with a £15 Boots voucher thrown in for good measure. Despite having phoned (you can't do it by e-mail) Lovefilm.com to cancel my free subscription within the time-scale required, they have still billed me for films I haven't received. They have also neglected to send me the promised £15 Boots voucher! My advice......AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!

  • Did you send back the DVDs you had?

I've found them to be generally better than Blockbuster.

I found them good at first but after a couple of months I found the turnaround slipped badly and then I never got any new films add to the fact they do not offer unlimited rentals (even though they say the do they actually have a limit if you read the small print) so I switched to Blockbuster.

When it came to cancelling it was a total nightmare. Firstly i followed the and got "you cannot cancel while you have a disc" So I returned all the discs but they never registered on the system at the same time and by the time the last one registered being returned another had been sent out.

So I tried freezing the account and returned all the disks once the system said returned i hit the cancel option. only to get "you cannot cancel a frozen account" but of course as soon as you unfreeze the account a film gets allocated.

I even tried deleting everything of my list but got an email saying while My list was short they would send out films they thorght I would like.

Next I sent them an email stating that I had tried there system to cancel but kept getting hurdles and as of now I would not pay any further. (it was the day before the direct debit came out so I phoned an cancelled the direct debit. this of course paid me up to date.)

I then got a rather rash email respose staing that I had to use there system to cancel and until I did I would be a member and if I missed any payments they would not hesitate to take further action.

So after a quick call the the office of fair trading I replied back stating that if they did not cancel me with immediate effect I would contact the ombusmen (sorry cannot remember who it was). The reply was an even rasher version of there previous email. (oh by now I had refrooze my account so I was not receiving disks from them)

I then wrote a very poilte letter to the ombusman enclosing copies of the email. I got a very nice letter back from them saying theyw ould contact Lovefilm. 2 days letter I got an email stating that they had manually cancelled my account. Hooray

The saga continues. end of the month i get a letter stating that the direct debit had failed and if i didnt make an immediate payment they would take further action. So once again we enter into the exchange of emails.

It then took me a further six months and a solicitors letter to get them to stop pestering me. I reported them several tmes to the ombudsmen and the solicitor wrote to them and said if they didnot stop this illegal attempt at blackmail or extortion (ie trying to force me to make payments with the treat of doing damage ir legal action) then I would proceed with legal action against them.

That finally stopped them. But just to either take the mick or proove they don't know there bum from there elbow they now regularily send me fliers saying "we miss you have 3 months free"

my advice AVOID lovefilm like the plague. if you want a good dvd rental place try https://www.mymoviestream.co.uk ok the site not flashy but I found they got thebest service.

Also have a read of https://www.dvdrr.com the uk section lets users review the services.

Lovefilm are seriously crap. Every couple of weeks there's a thread about them ripping someone off. I was with Tesco and Lovefilm took it over and made it crap!

Blockbuster rocks. Best thing about it is that if you have a problem and email customer services they reply promptly and courteously.
Don't grow up. Its a trap!

    Peace, love and labradors!
  • The problem I had with Blockbuster was that they NEVER had any of the discs in my top 10 in stock, so if I really wanted to see something, I'd have to go out and rent it from somewhere else.

  • I joined lovefilm on a 21 day free trial through Quidco and read the various threads AFTER signing up. I was naturally concerned but followed the advice of those on here: sent the dvds back promptly (didn't even watch them as I didn't have time!) and after 14 days cancelled online (which you are able to do if late at night). I received an email saying that cancellation was pending. I emptied my list, sent the dvds to be signed for (think it cost about 60p) and two days later got an email confirming cancellation.

Fingers crossed I won't be charged but if I am I will fight back as I have received their confirmation that my account is cancelled.
Proud to be dealing with my debts

mymoviestream.co.uk have terrible customer service. I took up a 3 week/6 DVD trial. After the 2nd week I e-mailed them asking them to confirm my first payment date. No reply. Today they took a payment of £12.99 as my free trial had ended yesterday, but since they didn't reply to my e-mail and I stupidly didn't note the date, I didn't cancel in time. I had thought the trial was for a month rather than 3 weeks.

With BB I have found that if you have new films in your top 10 then you get them straightaway. If you have older films there then they can take a bit longer (maybe they don't have so many copies of those)

    Excellent value - excellent service.

  • I did have new movies in my top 10 with BB but I never seemed to get any of them.

    Maybe you were just unlucky.

I tend to have new ones in that reserve list at the bottom - you know where they sit until they are released. As soon as they hit my list (which they seem to do automatically) I get them sent.

Like I say - maybe I'm just lucky. But when you search on here there are loads of problems with LF and hardly any (in comparison) with BB.
