Tesco TV died, less than a year old. Advice please

Hi

Our TV, a 21” Bush, died last night. Switched it on and……….nothing. It didn’t make any noise at all. We have checked the fuse and that is not the problem.

We purchased this TV for just under £100 in Tesco last Feb so it is just under a year old. We are aware that all electrical goods have a 1 year warranty. I presume that, since our contract was with Tesco, we should take it up with them, not the manufacturer.

At the time of purchase we received the leaflet with details of the 0845 Electrical Helpline, given with all electrical products.

I have 3 questions.

Has anyone had experience of phoning the Tesco Electrical Helpline - are they just likely to fob us off?

Would Tesco attempt to repair a £100 TV or should we return it the store where we purchased it?

Where exactly do we stand legally? I know its still inside the warranty period but are we entitled to a full refund/replacement or what? I have had a look at our statutory rights and it refers to…………the trader may make a reduction from the price paid to allow for the use you have had from the goods.

I appreciate any advice given.

  • Yes you are covered up to 6 years by the sale of goods act - that is UP TO. It depends on how long the product could reasonably be expected to function for. For example say your TV was expected to work for 4 years then as it has broken after 1 year (aprox) they would be within their rights to refund £75 (TV depreciating at £25/year).

Other than that no experience of their help phone - you may get lucky and get a full refund as it is within a year - just make suer you don't get fobbed off going to the manufacturere as you are right your contract is with Tescos.

It's probably best just to take it into Tesco and speak to someone at the customer service desk.
  • I would take it back to tesco and ask for a replacement or a refund. If you don't have a receipt it might be tricky to prove what you paid for it (for the purposes of the refund) but a credit card bill will suffice if it's on it. At the end of the day, if it's breaking down at the 11 month mark with reasonable use, the television is obviously not of merchantable quality and you should be entitled to the above under your statuatory rights.
Life in this world is, as it were, a sojourn in a cave. What can we know of reality? For all we can see of the true nature of existence is, shall we say, no more than bewildering and amusing shadows cast upon the inner wall of the cave by the unseen blinding light of absolute truth, from which we may or may not deduce some glimmer of veracity, and we as troglodyte seekers of wisdom can only lift our voices to the unseen and say humbly "Go on, do deformed rabbit again.....it's my favourite". © Terry Pratchett in "Small Gods"

  • Thanks for the above replies, folks. I do still have the receipt, thankfully.

I will visit Tesco in the next few days.

Don't be fobbed off with the old, "you'll have to speak/send it/deal with the manufacturer" line, either. It's Tesco's problem !

Phone the helpline - they will advise you to either take it to your local store or they will arrange for a repair/replacement themselves.
