Update on My Sky Broadband Experience - Further update

As promised here is my update so far:

I ordered my Sky Broadband Max package on the 30.12.2006
over the internet. Booked the slot 20.01.07 (a Saturday so don't have to take a day off work) for the Tech guy to come and install it all.

I got confirmation emails and all seems fine.

This week I got 3 letters telling me that my line will be activated around the 11th, but to give it a few days extra as BT might be a bit on the slow side. I got a confirmation of the date and time the tech guy is coming and another letter regarding my hardware requirements and to make sure the tech has access to all PC's. Pretty good! If any problems or questions I can give them a ring. This gives them high marks on my customer service list.

Today 12th, I got a text message from BT/Sky on my phone to tell me my broadband is activated. Very good! Now just need to wait for the Techie.

Then a week of testing and then I will cancel the BT broadband I have on my second home line and cancel that as well. So some serious cash to be saved. The only drawback so far is the £80 I had to pay ADT to install a filter in the security system box as the broadband and ADT supposedly do not work very well together and can cause false alarms which we do not want. But in the long run, about 3 months the savings will then kick in with one less line and much cheaper broadband from Sky.

Will let you all know in due time, how the techie and the install went and if it all works OK.

  • OK, Techie called me at 8.30 am to let me know he is on his way and will be there between 9 am and 12 noon.

He was here at 9.50 am and installed the system and set up the wireless router. He was very friendly and even checked the speed I can realistically get as the exchange is a way bit distant. So the max speed I can get is 8MB, but I am paying for up to 16MB, however I understand the problem with distances etc. He left at 10.10 am. All set up and working very well.

My old BT was capped at 2MB and I do notice an extreme speed increase. Just posting on this website is much faster and a joy. The kids will be happy too with the speed increase.

I asked the Techie regards to the reliability. He said they did have teething problems at first. Then there are those people who configure their PCs in such a way that there are problems getting a good connection. But in the end it is BT broadband and if there is a problem BT will always look after their customers first. BT is only leasing their broadband to other companies because they were told so by the regulator (Ofcom?). So they are not too helpful or happy to have others take their customers, but ultimately using their lines and broadband.

The next challenge will be when my kid comes home from Uni and she wants to connect to this service. I was left with all info on how to do my own setup. So that will be the next challenge but not until Easter.

So far everything is cool. Lets see how it works and if any outages occur for the next week before I cancel the BT line. As both broadband lines are literally the same I can expect a problem on both if one occurs. At least that is my theory. If a problem only occurs on the Sky and the BT is still working then would I be wrong in thinking that maybe BT is being "nasty"?

I want to change to Sky broadband from Supanet. Shall I cancel the Supanet as soon as I have the connection date from Sky or is it best to wait until Sky is up and running to make sure I don't have a period without broadband? Also, will I be able to keep my email addresses?

You will have a new email adress with sky in the form beachbeth@sky.com
You wont be able to send messages from your old supernet account but you may be able to collect them for up to 3 months.
You will need a MAC from supernet to migrate to Sky, BT should inform supernet when they have transferred you to Sky. That should terminate your account with them. But do it yourself when you have been swapped over.

you can send messages from any existing email address... simply set the outgoing email server to Sky's... I have had my supanet email addresses for about 5 years or so... and i haven't used supanet in 5 years :)

    Latest update:

Sky is running brilliantly. My kid got his x-box and Nintendo running on it as well via wireless and he is very happy at the top speed of 8MB, we are running multiple items at the same time and I see no drop in speed or delayed responses when he is downloading stuff and online gaming with x-box and me on my lappy. Will have to see what happens once the other kid comes home from Uni and wants to connect her lappy. But it should be OK. He says it is far better than BT. The router seems to be better as well as the signal is stronger even though both routers look identical. He tells me set up is far better and the connection is secure.

I canceled the second BT line and the BT broadband on it.
So will be saving a lot of dosh now.

So very happy with the service.
