Sorting out kitchen

I'm really fed up with having to search through my cupboards every time I cook. I have far too many dishes, cooking trays and gadgets , and really need to sort it all out. Trouble is I don't want to throw out anything that will be useful when I get even more into being OS. What are your essential items and why? What kitchen items do you no longer use? How do you organise your cupboards? Mixer or food processor? Is a sandwich maker really necessary? Your thoughts will be really appreciated.

  • Im with you on this one. When I moved here I had at least 2 less cupboards. I found that I used the same system that I do with my wardrobe - if I havnt used it in a year then it got thrown/charity shop/given to friends.

It was hard though, im just about to get a new kitchen hopefully and will have more space but now I wont fill it with loads of stuff coz I know that I will hardly use them - ie sandwhich maker - we used about twice a year - you can get those bags now that you use in the toaster though admittedly I havnt tried them.

    Good Luck

    Edited to say -

I got rid of George Foreman - way too big to store and use grill instead.

Also had a cheap food processor - instead got a smaller one from Kenwood that is a hand blender also.

Smoothie Maker - just didnt use - if I need to use the above instead.

Essential for me - BM & slowcooker. I am saving for a Kenwood Chef to have one day I will make space for this!

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks the sandwich toaster probably doesn't earn its place in the kitchen. Apparently you can also make toasties using the George Foreman type grill....has anyone done that?

I couldn't manage without a good sharp large 'cabbage' knife, a couple of balloon whisks, a stick blender and since joining this forum............ a slow cooker!!

To be worthwhile, an item must be 'to hand' (not stuck at the back of the top cupboard), easy to use, easy to wash and put away (not something that sits on the worktop until you can be bothered to pull out the contents of a cupboard to put it away).

Just think, is there a more OS way of doing this? My SIL dry fries cheese sandwiches to make 'toasties. A trick he learnt at uni.

Yup tried that one. Our George is a bit old and the non-stick is wearing away so it was a complete disaster!!! The bottom bit of bread went soggy from the cheese and stuck to the base and when I tried to ease it off with a plastic slice, the bit of bread just collapsed and stayed stuck to the grill.

Plus the sandwich toaster seals the edges which makes it easier to eat.

Our sandwich toaster has removable plates that go in the dishwasher, the George doesn't. So I vote for whichever is easier to clean!!! :D

Edit: if it was up to me I'd ditch the George as it's too much of a pain to clean due to the non-stick wearing away. But OH is very attached to that.... and his cappuccino/ espresso maker he's only used twice!!!

I like toasted sandwiches done in the george forman and have ditched the sandwich toaster as I don't think we need both.

We have a largish GF and it was beginning to get in the way but recently when I did a big clear out of the cupboards I tried storing it on it's side in the cupboard and that's saved a lot of space. So for now it's staying.

Hmmm. Wonder if I can convince OH to store the GF in the cupboard on it's side and then I'd have room on the worktop for a slow cooker or bread maker - which he insists I don't need

i was given a steamer that ive not used in ages-always got burned opening the section to see if the food-mainly potatoes-were cooked

BM has time both lurking in the back of the cupboard and in everyday use

stick blender-used at least once a week

large GF the one that deff doesnt fit in the cupboards lol its so big it sits on top of my microwave and comes down onto the worktop for using.id love the new one that the plates go into the dishwasher but havent had this one-my 4th-all that long

DW ok i know many of you would say not very OS but with a family of 5 id get left to do all the washing if we didnt have one so this is invaluable-i get the 100 dishwasher tabs from makro which are under a tenner

popcorn maker-got this when kids were small and loved popcorn but havent used it for years-freecycle here i come

SC a recent addition c/o santa-used a couple of times but am using up whats in my freezer before next big shop and nothing can really be done in it

    think thats everything
